I’m a 29 year old male and drank heavy for around 10 years. I’m 7 months sober now (longest I’ve been) and have no plans on returning to drinking. Back in 2018 I was drinking extremely heavy and was checked into a rehab with the help of my parents. A ultrasound was taken a few days into rehab which showed a fatty liver. After coming back from rehab I was still drinking but not as much.
I have been clean since 11/11/2020. I was lucky enough to get a fibro scan 2 days ago which showed a average kpa after 10 scans of 3.4.
I later found out the machine they used doesn’t show CAP results. So my question is can kpa results be converted to CAP or is that not possible at all ?
Thank you everyone

Thanks a lot Dm-001 for the kind words, I really do appreciate it. I am proud of myself and going to keep going as I’ve had a very tough battle with alcohol and all the bad things it brings with it.
Best of luck to you and thanks for replying to my post.
Someone will be along shortly no doubt about the CAP score, i don't think they can be converted though. Weirdly ill probably find out soon as I'm having a my first fibro scan in the next couple of weeks to try find out what's going on. 3.4 is a great result though.
Yes I’m quite proud of myself and looking forward to sobriety for the rest of my life. Oh nice to hear somebody can have a little knowledge about it, would love to see more comments.
Yeah I thought they wouldn’t convert but that’s weird bec the fibro scan machine costs so much anyways it should tell CAP & KPA. regardless I’m very happy with the score anyway... atleast I know there is no inflammation going on. Good to hear you’re near your scan, please keep us updated.... I wish you the best, were you a drinker ?
I was a drinker, I'm not sure how much you drank but i was pretty standard a bottle of wine a night for many years and now 6 months sober and have all sorts of symptoms but doctors are stumped so Fibroscan is next port of call. I wasnt really alcohol dependant though so found it quite easy to give up (luckily)
A bottle of night is quite a lot too but not that bad to give you cirrhosis. That’s my option. I had many many unexplained symptoms for years too, doctors were going crazy with me lol. Eventually it was nothing and the symptoms went away. I’m sure you will get a very low reading.
Hi,I have to have regular fibroscans as a result of autoimmune liver disease, you can’t convert the KPA score to CAP as they are each a measurement of a different thing. The CAP measures the amount of fatty change, the KPA measures the stiffness of the liver as a result of scarring. I’ve never been given a CAP score either.
You had a great KPA score, well done on giving up alcohol!
Hi rose and sorry to hear about the AID... I really hope you’re getting along well and I’m very glad you are getting those Fibroscans in regularly. Good way to keep an eye on your liver as I’ve heard it’s a quite accurate test.
Yes, thanks for the clarification... I had thought so but wasn’t 100%. Well atleast there is no inflammation going on so I’m very thankful.
Thank you and I’m going to keep going.... best of luck to you and thanks for replying to post.
Hiya. Well done with giving up the "grog"! I'm 8 months sober now & I understand the battle. I have Cirrhosis & have Ultrasound checks every 6months plus Fibroscans periodocally. It's extremely important that these are done to check there aren't any adverse changes in the liver. I was rushed into Hospital end of Oct 20 with a bleeding Gastric Ulcer. I nearly died. It was horrific. I'd been weaning off drink steadily & hadn't had any at all for the 4days before. I shan't elaborate, suffice to say my bedroom & bathroom resembled a murder scene, I'd lost so much blood I'd gone into shock & this brought on a Heart Attack. I live alone & I rang 999 but I was delirious. I was petrified. I've finally realised that alcohol is total poison to me & it took this incident to finally hammer home to me that it really was killing me! I'm so lucky to be alive. There's a lot of history to this pinnacle of a personal horror story but I've tried to keep it short. Wishing you well. Life is quality without drink. No-one needs it x
Hi parcif and thank you for reading and replying to my post, I really do appreciate all the input. Very happy to hear you are sober now. I also hope your cirrhosis is under control and you so glad you found out about it in good time. You seem like you have been through a lot :(. Thank you for sharing your story, it really does put me off drinking anymore and makes me realise what a horrible addiction it is.
I’m so happy you have passed the devastation times and are looking after yourself and not drinking. You’re right about anybody needing it and especially if you cannot control it... it is definitely not for you at all, just like myself. I’m so glad I quit. Thanks so much for sharing and I wish you the best of health and luck.
By the way what are your fibro scan results ? If you don’t mind sharing. I bet your liver has improved massively from being sober.
Hiya x I'll have to look through my notes see if I can find them but my Gastro Consultant (he did the emergency op. on my ulcer) was very happy - even happier that at I'm not drinking! This may sound an additional "strange one" but I had my eyes tested a couple of weeks ago. I had them tested when I was drinking heavily & I was referred to an Eye Specialist. I failed 2attend for fear of them finding something really serious. This eye test was absolutely normal, my eyesight has improved & there was nothing showing that requred me to be further referred! Eye Tests can show up all sorts of health markers & so that's another reason not to drink. I honestly can't now imagine myself drinking alcohol. I can't think of even 1 situation I could be in where having a drink would make anything any better. I feel & look healthy, I sleep well & I have a positive outlook on things. I have my life back & I'm in control. I think my liver loves me!
I had a fibroscan which didn’t give a CAP score. I spoke to a nurse on the liver helpline who said it was probably an older machine. The newer ones give CAP scores apparently. The actually KPA scores will remain the same however.
Hi worried, hope you’re well and not worried anymore. Thank you for the response. I think you’re right, most be old machines. Would have loved to know the cap though. Nevertheless I’m very grateful I had a Fibroscan and scored well. I might save up and get one done privately in the future. What was your KPA average ?
Sounds like you had an ultrasound elastography and not a fibroscan. They are similar tests in that they both measure liver stiffness, however the ultrasound elastography does not give a CAP score and it is done on a conventional ultrasound machine and not a fibroscan machine. Ask for a copy of your report and confirm with your Dr. if the test you had was a fibroscan or ultrasound elastography. You can not convert KPA score to CAP. They are two different measurements. KPA is the stiffness which correlates to your fibrosis score and CAP score correlates to the amount of fat in your liver.
Hi KC, and thank you for responding. I believe it was a Fibroscan and not a ultrasound elastography. Definitely was a fibro scan but like mention above I think where I had got it they are using the older machines which only shows KPA. I have got a copy of the results and don’t mind sharing if you want to see it. I will ask my doctor the next time I see him anyway, it’s on his system too. Thanks, I’m going to look into ultrasound elastography and read about it.
I think that fibroscan result is great. Assuming that they haven’t found anything else that might have been causing the fatty liver or other issues impacting on the liver (which is unlikely), I think you are in a great position. To have found out at a relatively young age how alcohol was harming you, and to have the presence of mind to stop drinking, puts you in a really strong place. 👏
