I had a Fibro scan of 14.5 kpa and Fibro 3. I guess that means fibrosis in the 3rd stage meaning cirrhosis. Can anyone tell me if they have had a fibro scan and what does it all mean? I am kind of confused because I have had bloodwork and everything is find except my alt and ast which is mildly elevated

Hi there I have had a fibroscan came out at 19kpa and fibro 4 meaning cirrhosis they was going to run it again some months later but decided not to ( I get the feeling they don't really trust the answers) as my blood tests of today are normal. X

Thank you for responding to my post. I think the only real way to tell what the stage is to get a biopsy done. Unfortunately it is such an invasive process, either the fine needle biopsy or the trans jugular biopsy. My doctor won't do either because I've had them done years ago. The only test they will do is the Fibroscan which I believe is sometimes inaccurate.

Hello love, No,, you don,t have cirhosis that is the stage above yours at 5.. Fibrosis is reversable through diet, exercise etc and of course no alcohol. The fact that your bloodwork is only slightly elevated suggests that so far you have dodged the bullet, please heed the warning and don,t tempt fate, I did and now have stage 4 cirhosis caused largely through alcohol. I changed my lifestyle as soon as I found my blood panel results were so high but of course by then it was too late. That said, fibrosis as i mentioned is reversable and there is now some early research that suggests that early cirhosis may be reversable in the future. Please look after yourself and if you drink then reading some of the stories here from folk like American Kim, Jim LaJ and others helped me to see where i was heading. Best wishes, and enjoy the holiday. x

Thank you for your response. I have starting walking for a 1/2 hour daily on my treadmill. I am going to see a dietician to maybe get some input as to what I should be eating. I am wondering why there is such a discrepancy between my blood work and Fibroscan? The bloodwork says my Fibrosis Score is 0.14 and Fibrosis stage is F0 A1. Not sure what to make of this? Can anyone comment and let me know of similar scenarios they have had.

My last Fibroscan was 23.7 kpa. I had a follow up ultrasound which showed no signs of cirrhosis but my liver was ‘bright’ indicative of fatty liver. No portal hypertension was showing and organs where all normal size. I have not drank alcohol in 2 years and show no other signs of liver damage. My bloods are now all in within range which was far from the case 3-4 years ago. I now need to concentrate on loosing a little weight and doing more exercises as my BMI is 27 so not dramatically high but not perfect either 😉

Hi Blondiee30. I had something similar about a year ago. I was diagnosed with Hep C. You mentioned your ALT and AST elevated. Those are possibly an indication of hepatitis. I would get checked for Hep. My final fibroscan score was 21.6 and I have been diagnosed with cirrhosis and splenomegaly. The good news my HCV has been treated and I am free of the primary reason why my liver was getting damaged and the enlarged spleen. I have read up a little on Fibroscan and when a score has been recorded on the higher range then there is little point in doing it again as the damage is confirmed and usually with other symptoms which confirms cirrhosis, which is where the damage done to the liver does not naturally repair. A Fibroscan only investigates a small volume of the liver and does not mean the whole liver is in the same condition. I think it only records from about 1 square centimeter of the liver so numerous reading will give different readings depending on the position of the probe. I hope this helps. I get bloods checked every 6 months and all is fine except I am mildly anemic. Low platelets and red blood count.

We are not medically trained so cannot decipher results . You need to be speaking with your liver specialist. I an say my bloods all appeared normal what I had at my GPs. I had 2 previous fibroscans, 1st showed fatty liver, 2nd was diagnosed as severe fibrosis, level 3. 10 days ago I had another fibroscan, saw a consultant and I now have cirrhosis. If I had not been on this site I would likely have had a melt down, BUT cirrhosis is a staged disease He explained that yes I had lost some weight as recommended but to reduce fat in my liver I need to virtually banish carbs from my diet. Mine is NA related but discovering it early means steps can be taken to prolong life. I look picture of health, I feel no symptoms either. A lot of people think its caused by alcohol. There are numerous causes, people who are obese are warned about diabetes but for some cirrhosis is also a risk factor. You will have to list questions to take with you when you see your consultant. The site is packed with peoples personal experiences, but we are all unique . The more you read the more you will see this. Lovely people and no one is judgemental Hazel x another blonde lol

Fibroscan can give a false high reading when the liver has ongoing inflammation - if your ALT and AST are both elevated it indicates there is some ongoing inflammation and therefore this might indeed be a false high reading. If it were actually a true reading then it still doesn't necessarily mean cirrhosis (F3 isn't cirrhosis but still in the fibrosis band / F4 is cirrhosis). Also, Fibroscan also has different scores for different underlying condition therefore an accurate score of 14.5 kpa for a condition like NAFLD (Non-Alcohol Related Fatty liver) might indicate F4 but in Alcohol related liver would still be F3, in a choleostatic liver condition it would still be F2 on the cusp of F3.

Fibroscan accuracy does seem to be some what questionable with so many variants and seems to cause a shed load of uncertainty when the patient doesn't get any explanation just some random kPa score to go away with.

Your medics need to discuss this more fully with you and see where you go from here.
