Can acities affect the resukts of a fibro scan ,? If so how ,? Would it not just read therefore not giving a result at all ?

I've been told thar my goid fibro scan which cleared me of cirrhosis prob wouldn't have read correctly because of fluid ! However the week after a ultra sound showed that I had no acodties .

Confused. Com

Hello Yvonne, acities can certainly affect the results of a fibro scan. So can having a BMI of 30%.

Hi Yvonne.I once had 2 scans followed by a further scan and the liver nurse put the inaccurate readings down to the amount of acsites fluid on my abdomen. She was persistent and organised a drain with intentions of establishing a reading with the fibroscan machine straight after. The drain was on a Friday and she couldn't arrange a scan until the Monday and I had built up an excessive amount of fluid over the weekend (enough not to get an accurate reading)(I was very poorly at the time). After both of us learning a lesson, she arranged another drain early in the morning and waited on standby with machine, within 20 minutes of the nurses removing the tube she eventually got the readings (the reading wasn't good) but also stated that the results are not 100% accurate down to the rids and pockets of fluid unable to reach.

So all in all.......yes ascites fluid can affect the reading from a fibroscan.

I hope you have better luck then me.

Good luck with everything,

Danny x

Once you have a few scans together then they can make a n accurate diagnosis. Wishing you all the best and try to be a positive patient who is inquisitive and wants to know all the answers, ask everyone you come across. Danny x

Hey thanks for getting back and sharing your experience with me . I'm actulu on my way for a ultra sound ,I think with a view to another fibro ,although no app fir this .

At the time of my fibro scan I wasn't bloated . Acities had been notice through a gyni Dr doing ultra sound . When I had next ultra sound to determine the amount of fluid there wasn't any . This happened twice .

It was only after mu lifethreathning bleed last August that I developed acities . I has this drained . About a month later I had the fibro therefore ,it was presumed that I had acities . Next ultra sound 4 week later and zero fluid ( got fed up of typing A....) 😆

Had banding last week . He did 7 and I'm still sore . Especially when swallowing x

I just have to crack on with it. I'm feeling ok & in a good place ,most of the times

Good luck to you & look after yourself x

Hi Yvonne, I would have expected it to overestimate rather than underestimate your kpa reading when there is fluid but I could be wrong.

I'm not sure however, I'd of thought that there wouldn't be a reading . If the signal has to go through fluid ! Ah well ...they have a lot to answer for .my fatal bleed could have been avoided ! Thank yoy y

I would of thought ,that they wouldn't have achieved a reading ?

Yes I think you're right, though it might depend on the amount of fluid. Good to hear you're getting another scan, hopefully it will shed some light, especially if you intend to get another fibroscan soon after. Good luck and let us know how you get on.
