High GGT?

I got a GGT result of 108 in May and immediately stopped drinking. I never drank more than 2 glasses of wine a night. My test results today were 60. I thought they would be back to normal. My AST was normal and ALT was just slightly elevated. 4 points over acceptable range. Should I be worried?

It's early days since your cessation of alcohol so results won't immediately go into the normal range. Reference ranges for different labs do vary - QEB Birmingham lists GGT range as 9-40 U/L for ladies so you are still a little way out of that, ALT of just above upper limit of normal isn't too concerning since it can vary throughout the day and even after exercise or a minor infection etc.Obviously you are doing the right thing in knocking the alcohol on the head and hopefully over time bloods will return to normal.

Thank you for your message. It was reassuring. I didn't think just drinking wine with dinner could lead to high GGT levels. It was a shock!

Hi Emilia,Sorry to hear about your GGT levels.

I was misdiagnosed 3 times! Every doctor said, my liver “was doing its job”. It was only when I did the research that GGT markers indicate liver disease.

My levels were 200+ for years.

My Haematologist never connected the dots!!

GGT levels are a sign of liver damage.

With that said, within 6 weeks of eating 80% veg and 20% fruit along with key supplements and drinking “pure” cleansed water, my GGT level reduced 53 (50 and below is the norm).

Also, all my other LFT were normal.

What’s your current diet?

Cheers. Dan

Hi Dan, thanks for sharing your story. I am not a vegetarian but do eat pretty healthy. Very little white bread, carbs or potatoes or rice. Mostly protein, vegetables. Also very little sugar as I am pre-diabetic. I am amazed at how your GGT levels decreased. I assume you didn't drink alcohol at all during this time? I am glad my GGT levels are decreasing but surprised that they were so high as I only drink wine with dinner and never more than two glasses. But maybe it is the cumulative effect over years. I will try to eat more vegetables and see if this helps. Thanks!

Hi,

If your results remain outside of the reported reference range, you could consider requesting an Ultra Sound scan which may provide more clinical information.
