High ggt levels

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this community and I just wanted a bit of advice. I have been drinking on and off for 22 years but heavily the last few years. Bottle to bottle and a half of wine a night. 2 months ago my ggt level was 152. I have cut down on drink and had a repeat test recently. Ggt levels are 64. All other liver tests are normal. Will I ever get back to normal ggt levels?

If there is no permanent damage and you keep to the guidelines/recommendations for safe alcohol consumption, it should come down. This can take some time, though.

Thank you P. Sometimes I just feel a bit wreckless. I know it's not good for me but I do it anyway. It's almost like a treat to myself after a hard days work. It's become habitual. Thank you for your support. Xxx

It took me 2 years to bring it down from two thousand six hundred to fifty. Don't tell anybody. Secret between the two of us:-)

I actually did not expect to see ULN ever again.

Thank you. I am fine. Extremely calm.

One more thing I have observed: Two years ago, I switched to alcohol-free beer, the stuff that carries 0.6%. The value went down with time until mid three hundreds. There it got stuck.

It took a year of complete abstinence to bring it down to fifty.

I have the impression that once the liver has learned the lesson of increased enzyme induction, it does not care about the amount of alcohol too much it takes for it to start working. Just a theory.

Thank you P. You have been so helpful. Ya the liver is not stupid. Well done you on abstinence. That's the way I need to go. Xx

Abstinence is not the right word. I am not depriving me of anything. I was much poorer when I drank than now that I don't.

Probably different for everybody, though.

Good luck.
