Hi all hope you are well, I've been to have my varices banded all 6 of them, does anyone have any tips I thank goodness had sedation,
Hope you are ok!
There was a really good thread on here a while ago about foods to eat. the softer the better apparently!
Did they say you could have any pain killers like paracetamol?
I can't have paracetamol because when I had an RTA many years ago I damaged my spine they left me on co codamol for years and now say they are packed with paracetamol which contributed to my liver disease, I can have Nephropan but they don't really help, eating soft food and ice lollies, at least is all done for now. Hi there. Had mine banded a little over a month ago. I had discomfort for about a week. Ate mostly softer things. Thank heavens for mashed potatoes! You will get through it...
Hi Tia, Mum had hers banded a year ago. She ate soft food for a while. The doctors said to avoid meat because that isn’t soft enough. She like d mashed banana with milk, yogurts, smooth soups, and yes mashed potato with cheese. Hope this helps. Hang in there.
Hi, I know how you feel. 3 weeks ago I had 5 Banded and I have to go back in 3 weeks to get 3 more done. Grade 3 Varices. I absolutely hated the entire procedure, even though they did mine under general anesthetic. They had tried 3 times before and I couldn't stop gagging, even with the highest conscious sedation. The after effects were intolerable.
Milk and Ice cream was my saviour. Smoothies. No fruit juice. Warm coffee and tea. It took atleast 6 days before I could tolerate any food harder than mash, soups, soggy porridge. I drank mostly and went through 3 tubs of bland ice cream!! Once the bands I guess came off. I noticed the difference and slowly dared eat normal food again. 10 days and I was normal. Urgh. It's horrible, uncomfortable and to be honest I don't think pain killers would work. Maybe heartburn medicine. You just kind of have to wait for them to fall off. Treat your esophagus kind and the sooner you'll be eating normally again. I'm dreading them calling me to book the next round. Although I'm so thankful for getting the general anesthetic. These varices will kill you if you don't follow all your consultants orders.Just know, this site and all the lovely knowledgeable people are here to help.
Take care and get well soon.

Thank you so much, you are right the whole procedure is truly horrid, I had a sedative, still have night mares from last November when I had an upper GI bleed, then the very same night rushed to theatre with my abdomen filled with my blood transfusion, This site is so supportive,
Take care Debbie x
Hi when I was rushed to hospital with severe bleed had had banding done I didn't know much about that one. Since then I have had 2 lots of banding done as outpatient one with sedation which was fine the other without which wasn't very pleasant I ended up with sore throat and bad heartburn. I had another endoscopy last November and needed nothing done as bands had shrunk. I go to have another 22and February but saw my liver nurse yesterday and she was really pleased me. I had decompensated liver which is now compensating and liver working. I also saw dietition and as I have had a poor appetite I am having 5 smaller meals and snacks also 2 supplement shakes a day. I have six months scans one due in couple of weeks. Hope this helps x
