I currently have a pre-paid prescription card that I pay £104 a year. Do you all have the same or do you have the Exemption Certificates?
Hope your all ok.

Same as you Chelle, accept I get mine on a monthly DD which works out just over a tenner a month, so actually a bit more expensive than the annual.
Thank you. I have asked on another group because I am on oral Chemotherapy and Warfarin and they will be life long, so I just wanted to check.
I'll let you know what I get told from my GP. I imagine after tx and needing medication for life it would be something that we get for free. I know those with Diabetes and Thyroid issues have the exemption certs.
Chelle
I was told by a pharmacist once that I should be entitled due to immuno suppressants. I got a bunch of forms but seem to remember that it was only for thyroid, maybe diabetic to but can't remember. Not sure why but life long and life saving weren't the criteria.
I'm assuming thyroid and diabetes were put on the exemption list years ago when they were some of the only life long conditions that could be treated with drugs.
IMHO and I hope I don't sound too mean spirited about it, but perhaps it would be fairer if they were also taken off the exception list. People with thyroid problems get ALL their prescriptions free not just those relating to thyroid issues. That can't be right can it?
Hi, check out anther post on health unlocked called:
Exemption from prescription charges for MPD medication.
It says that if pv is classed as a rare blood cancer then you should be able to claim for free prescriptions. You would need to get a form from your gp. Hope this helps. X
Hi Chelle,
Terry also has the ppc on monthly direct debit. His immuno suppressants do not come free apparently.
I have the Exemption Certificate, because one of the qualifying conditions is epilepsy. All I had to do was fill out a form at the GPs front desk; he wrote "epilepsy" as the reason, signed it and sent it off. I have to renew it this year.
I get the yearly prepayment even though I've been on regular meds since 2003 and will be for the rest of my life that will obviously increase after transplant we do not qualify for free prescriptions.
I find it ludicrous that we HAVE to take medication to stay alive to survive if you want but we have to pay for the privilege to do so.
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for paying your way but who decides what conditions should be given free meds and what shouldn't? Where is the line?
Diseases are horrible, but what makes one persons disease more credible than mine or yours? Maybe it's because some diseases recieve greater publicity and therefore greater understanding.
(Rant over, puts soap box back in cupboard, mic drop and exit)
Hi chelle. Well I don't work so all my meds are paid for as I am on ESA supprt group and topped up with DLA . Isn't there any way you can get an exemption? I am sure you can 🤔🤔.. hope you are keeping well
I am ok ,could be better but plodding on 😊xc
I am actually entitled to it because I have cancer. So I shall be getting my GP to sign the form when I am with him next week and am also able to claim back for the past two certificates I have purchased which is good news. x
A medical exemption certificate can only be obtained by people with one or more of the following:
a permanent fistula (for example, caecostomy, colostomy, laryngostomy or ileostomy) which needs continuous surgical dressing or an appliance
a form of hypoadrenalism (for example, Addison’s Disease) for which specific substitution therapy is essential
diabetes insipidus and other forms of hypopituitarism
diabetes mellitus, except where treatment is by diet alone
hypoparathyroidism
myasthenia gravis
myxoedema (that is, hypothyroidism which needs thyroid hormone replacement)
epilepsy which needs continuous anticonvulsive therapy
a continuing physical disability which means you cannot go out without the help of another person
cancer and are undergoing treatment for either:
- cancer
- the effects of cancer
- the effects of cancer treatment
Yep... monthly DD for me
Hi I have an exemption certificate because all the medication has given me diabetes. I'm doing fine got comb now and pulled my wound site so in abit of pain but my liver is doing fine which is the main thing 😊 X
I have a monthly dd. I think it's awful for people long term illness doesn't get it free. There is a petition on psc support not sure if it will do anything though.
Xx
I have same as you but pay monthly direct debit, call it my season ticket
