Absorption of iron(ferritin) in the blood not the Hemochromatosis disease

Would like to meet other ladies who are absorbing iron (ferritin) in their blood.

I don't have Overload iron which is called hemochromatosis but it's abnormal to have high iron as it can affect the liver, heart and kidneys.

You cannot be “absorbing” excess iron without some reason ie gentic Haemochromatosis or for some other secondary reason like you need regular blood transfusions. However raised serum ferritin does not necessarily mean you are absorbing too much iron, it can be raised for other reasons like infection or inflammation in the body, alcohol abuse or metabolic syndrome. Get a good check up.

Hi Hdon

No I don't have the genetic overload iron. I heard it might be inflammation in my body. I'm getting more medical test. A MRI will show more details. Otherwise I'm active and have a good appetite but I really changed my diet I don't eat red meat because that is the worse. I eat more fish like salmon and trout and legumes. I believe that they will find out how to lower this iron.

I had the same issue with high levels of iron. I gave up alcohol and within about 6 months the iron levels were normal.

Hi Edwen

I'm happy for you but I don't drink alcohol ever. So my iron absorption must be from something else. Thank you for your reply

Hi nichole 23

I know that if your iron levels remain high they will take blood out of your body. A pint or so. Apparently this is common in reducing iron which can be dangerous if untreated.

Hi Edwen Yes I know it can attack your liver, heart or kidneys. I don't have overload iron so was not suggested to give blood yet. I will contact my GP to ask her if it's a good thing for me to give blood right now. It seems I have to ask her everything, I saw a Hematologist a year ago and he did not think it was too high but it's higher this year than last year. Maybe I should consult a Naturopath because they seemed to do more research than medical doctors. I know that red meat is the worse so I avoid that and try to eat more fish so hopefully it will help in the meantime.

Did you know Edwen that there are 1 in 4 people having liver problems. Lots of people have non alcoholic fatty liver disease and others it's alcoholic fatty liver disease which usually leads to cirrhosis .

Yes Nicole everyone on this forum has been affected by some kind of liver disease, be it mild fatty liver or end stage liver disease and everything in between which has been caused by a multitude of problems. Others on this forum are or have been carers for their loved ones suffering from these illnesses. Most are very knowledgable and supportive.

Hi I don't take Vit C by itself. I take an iron free multivitan and minerals and it hasVit C but that's okay as long as it's not just Vit C. I talked to a Naturopath and she said I have to avoid all products with wheat. (I wonder if this is true). She said coffee is not good for me and I heard that it i s good for people with small liver problems. She wants me to drink green tea. Green tea will get your blood platelets lower. She also said to eat all veggies except tomatoes, eggplants, peppers and potatoes but sweet potatoes are good. All other veggies are good but limit fruit intake. Does anyone ever heard this.

Ps. Cut down on your vitamin C intake too

Good luck

How high is your level? My gp doesn’t seem to worry about my levels, which are above the recommended level. She says it’s just ‘me’!
