Reassurance regarding surgery

Happyluckymummyof2 profile image

Hi I hope everyone is keeping well. I haven’t written in a while and thankfully since being diagnosed with cirrhosis 3 years ago life has been kind and I am happy and healthy x

I have a question I am currently on the waiting list for cholecystectomy for gallstones and due to liver disease I am classed as high risk for surgery. They have informed me of all the risks and complications associated with anaesthetic and surgery etc.l and that there is a high mortality rate.

My question is I am due for septoplasty on my nose in 2 weeks and there has never been any discussion around surgery or the risks as previously. Obviously the type of surgery is different but it still does involve anaesthetic and this brings risks with liver function etc.

Since diagnosis I have been fortunate to have no associated ill effects at all and my bloods have always been normal. Considering I nearly died and had hepatitis, encephalopathy, stomach bleed and many other associated complications.

I don’t have portal hypertension and never have.

I wonder if anyone with cirrhosis on here has had routine surgery and if so were risks etc discussed ?

It would be great to hear from others for some reassurance too x

Thanks 😊

Hi,

We are sorry you never received any replies to your post.

If you have a diagnosis of cirrhosis and have routine surgery coming up, we would suggest to fully discuss matters with the surgical team looking after you and also your hepatologist.

Also do remember to mention your diagnosis when you attend for your pre assessment surgical appointment usually with a nurse before your surgery.

Best of luck
