Liver cysts - should I be worried ?

I had a scan last week for a suspected AAA which was negative but showed I have 6 cysts on my liver. I’ve heard nothing from my GP since then. I’ve read that some people have one or two cysts and if you have ten cysts it’s considered polycystic liver disease. I seem to be somewhere in the middle. Does anyone else have a similar problem or can anyone give me more info please ?

There are numerous type of liver cyst, my hubby has several which show up on his routine scans but they cause him no issue (he has regular scans because he also has cirrhosis which is nothing to do with his cysts).

The British Liver Trust has a page dedicated to benign liver cysts which might help you out with more information.

Hi Grandma 63.

I have an Enlarged Liver with several cysts both on the inside and the outside of my Liver. Don't know what type of Cysts they are. 🤔Have also got Cyst on the Pancreas and Blocked Bile Ducts also got Cyst on the Kidney and Sludgy Gallbladder and just 1 large Gallstone.

Also got a 16 cm Haitus Hernia.

Was just about ready to go into hospital for Gallbladder removal and to unblock the Bile Ducts when this Coronavirus raised it's ugly head.

So my operation had to be postponed until the Coronavirus has died down.

They haven't said much about the Liver Cysts. I have to wait until they can have a good look inside. YUK.

I suppose it depends upon what type of Cysts you have.

If you're worried, make an appointment with your GP. They should be able to get the results up on their screen.

At least it will help you to take things one step at a time.

You could be worrying over nothing.

Let's hope so ,because there are a numerous different types of Cysts. 😊

I've had Cirrhosis of the liver diagnosed about 3 years ago and they said I had 'Nodules' on my liver (another word for cysts I think). They said it was the liver 'trying to heal itself'.

But having been monitoring them for a couple of years they wanted to do a biopsy to see if they were cancerous, which it turned out they weren't. But still they wanted to 'ablate' - or remove them.

Then more recently this year they wanted to get rid of them by another method. I forget what it's called but it involves inserting a small tube into an artery and feeding it to the liver and then placing small plastic granules so as to cut off the blood to the 'nodules'.

I must say I'm not very keen on this, especially as there was no sign of cancer! It seems they have a 'better out than in' philosophy!!

Hi RonShirt. I don't know anything about Liver cysts really. My problems were just about to get sorted out when the Coronavirus started.

I have a lot of pain, i don't know if it's to do with the Gallbladder,Blocked Bile Ducts or my Sludgy Gallbladder and 1 large Gallstone,I have an Enlarged Liver, several Cysts both on the inside and outside of the Liver also Cysts on the one Kidney. And Cyst on the Pancreas..

They thought at 1st that I had Pancreatic Cancer. But if it was that,I wouldn't be here now. My Mum had Pancreatic Cancer and passed away 6 months after diagnosis. Bless Her.

Mind you. Sometimes the Philosophy Better out than in , is a good one.

They could be concerned about them turning to Cancer. Even though there's no sign of it at present.

Hi, I’ve got 3 cysts. Scanned and all considered ok albeit one is 10cms long. Can I ask a question please as I’m struggling with alcohol dependence which has worsened in lockdown. Is your condition caused by alcohol and if so, how did you wean yourself off as I’m finding it really difficult? Thanks

Hi, no it’s not alcohol related. I’ve never been much of a drinker even in my younger days I didn’t think the after effects were worth it but for a few years now i’ve been on medication for my heart which wouldn’t mix well with alcohol. Good luck though.

Hi,

Katie has already kindly shared our publication that covers liver cysts.

We would suggest you discuss what kind of cysts you have with your doctor and how they will be monitored.

Best wishes
