Hi

I had a blood test done at a rheumatologist for general health reasons but it come back month ago and i never heard anything about it so thought it was normal... friday i got a text from my GP saying “ urgent can you call us” so it taken me till today to get through as obviously it calls only at this time.

I was told that the bloods showed my “ serum ALT, liver enzymes” were low... 11 when generally 30-40 is good....

I got to go for another blood test monday to make sure nothing was wrong at that time to give a random low test...

it worries me as about 3 years ago i was given a antibiotic called co amoxiclav and it gave me Asymptomatic hepatitis and i went yellow and was sent to a emergency clinic where i had liver failure and my LFTS were 1080.

I dont drink. Smoke..im slim... i exercise every day..

I eat super healthy.

So im wanderinf if anyone can give me advice how to higher my SERUM ALT ENZYMES naturally... before monday.

Can any supplements make this reading wrong as i take alot...

Also at that time i was taking progesterone pill would that make diff to reading?

My gp waa good on phone but he so busy he didnt really have time to explain anything to me... which i totally understand

Hi Lulububs

We appreciate that you must feel very concerned, however, community guidelines do explain we are not a medical forum and ask that members do not post test results asking for interpretation or medical advice.

No one is medically qualified on the forum, and it is important that you discuss these results with your own doctor for their medical assessment, they have access to your complete medical notes and are best placed to advise.

Very best wishes.

A lot of people on the forum would love to have an ALT of 11. The normal range in Australia is 5 to 40. The lower the better as long as it's in the normal range. A low figure like yours indicates that your liver is healthy provided all of the other figures are in the normal range.

Oh really? They rang me saying it was to low, said it showed lack of elasticity in liver and lungs was i having problems breathing or feeling lethargic or sick at this moment in time dont most people feel like that being stuck indoors not being able to work.

He said between 20-40 , to high or to low shows somethings wrong.

Thanku for saying that at least i can worry a little less.. because of what happened three years ago with hepatitis from antibiotics and being told i had lesion on liver it always been the thing i go over board trying to keep healthy...

Can supplements mess with ur liver or give weird blood reading , i know ur not a dr but just wandering

AST and ALT are associated with inflammation and/or injury to liver cells. Damage to the liver typically results in a leak of AST and ALT into the bloodstream. I'd love to have your ALT score of 11. It's an excellent one indicating that at the time your blood test was done your liver had a very low level of inflammation and/or injury to liver cells. Even if your score was 0 while it would be unusually low I don't believe it would be anything to worry about. As far as I know ALT can't be too low.

Supplements can mess with your liver e.g. iron supplements for someone not deficient in iron can result in iron overload which damages the liver, protein & amino acid supplements can force the liver & kidneys to work harder than normal, vitamin A supplements should never be taken by someone with advanced liver disease etc etc.

Anyone with a damaged liver should talk to their consultant about what if any supplements to take.

Thanku so much for ur advice...

I only take probiotics so hope thats ok..

Got another test monday il ask what they saw that wasnt right as i may have got confused.

It prob same in australia that getting a dr to call u or to see anyone at mo is like pulling teeth...

Probiotics should be okay however if you eat 'super healthy' as you indicated you do you shouldn't need them. Antibiotics can kill good gut bacteria so taking probiotics after the antibiotics you were given was probably a good idea however that was a long time ago.
