Hi
You might be as well phoning your consultant's secretary so that she can have a word with him to see what's going on.
Thanks for that I'm going to Drs tmo to get it sorted feel badly informed regards Elric
It's just a pain having to sort something else out!! Good luck tomorrow
I need al the help and advice I can get and it's the best and most honest on here thanks Oldham 12 thank goodness for this site
Hi there, I've been taking rifaximin since I was diagnosed. I don't know which country you're in but Drs try and get out of prescribing it in the UK because its expensive
Thanks I am beginning to understand that fact
Hello Elric1, have you tried Lactulose
Yeah it does, it's really good. Don't take lactulose it's really bad for your system.
I think we need to use caution when using sweeping statements that any medication is 'really bad for your system'. The first line treatment for Hepatic Encephalopathy symptoms is lactulose and most folk are started on it and then if need be rifaximin added. Rifaximin in combination with lactulose is now the most common means of treating HE. A lot of folks on here are on it and like my hubby for some time (April 2012) and whilst it has some unfortunate side effects like the sudden and unannounced toilet urge it is also playing a role in keeping his HE symptoms on the minor side so hasn't proved at all bad for his system.

Sorry but have you taken lactulose? With all due respect I understand your husband has liver problems but unless you've actually been in hospital and physically suffered the side effects I think I can make that comment. I've seen alot of your comments and you're an extremely knowledgeable lady but I've expressed my opinion and it comes with a caveat - it's my opinion through actual physical experience.
My husband was on lactulose from day 1 of his diagnosis of alcoholic cirrhosis and suffered absolutely no side effects from it at all. It kept HE under control, never caused 💩problems, merely softened it slightly to avoid straining. Lactulose was the 1 med he didnt have to take another med to stop any side effects for
I was given it in hospital and it was the most unpleasant thing - absolutely awful. I couldn't walk as I caught guillain-barre in hospital so every time I had to go to the toilet which was about every 5 minutes I had to get help to get there and get assistance so I think that made what was at best unpleasant an even worse experience!
I knew Rifaximin was expensive but once I knew I could take it with no side effects I just flat out refused to take lactulose.
I work for the NHS by the way.
