Hi, I pain under my right rib cage, radiating to back and right shoulder. An ultrasound showed fatty liver disease. A Fibroscan score was 6.5 kpa and ELF blood test showed Fibrosis between 2 and 3. My question is that does Fibrosis give you pain. Thanks in advance.
Liver Pain: Hi, I pain under my right... - British Liver Trust
Liver Pain
Sorry forgot to mention that I don't drink but over weight
If your liver is currently inflamed and enlarged then yes it can be sore. Your liver itself has no pain receptors, however, the liver is enclosed in a membrane called the Glissons capsule which when stretched due to the underlying organ being enlarged can cause pain.
However, having said that have you been checked out for any issues with the gall bladder as that is most common for causing the radiating pain from the 'liver region'.
Go to your doctors and tell them about this pain issue, whilst it might be to do with your liver it also might not and only a doctor can test for it and tell you for sure - we can only offer educated guesses.

I think it can! My ultrasound showed a moderate fatty liver. Haven’t had any other tests because my liver enzymes are normal so my doctor won’t order them. From research and talking to people on here who’ve talked with their specialists, it appears that when the liver gets full of fat and enlarges, it can hit the capsule and cause pain. I have the same pain under the right rib cage like you. If I eat VERY healthy and exercise every single day, the pain will subside. Try that if you can. I have a lot of healthy recipes I could send you.
Not sure if you have fatty liver from food or alcohol, mine is from food. Obviously, if yours is from alcohol, your main priority should be to quit drinking. ❤️
Thanks Ajo13. Mine is due to food. I don't drink. I have been avoiding fat recently. I would appreciate any suggestions for food.
hi Ajo 13, what is healthy eating. i have been told even fruit is bad for you due to Fructose. can you please send me any healthy recipes?
What Katie has said is spot on. Out of all the test you've had, the ELF test with markers is the most reliable, and does give good information. If your liver is at the fibrosis stage then this may still be repairable, and reversed. But if this isn't sorted out very soon, your liver runs the risk of becoming cirrhotic.
Your in the system now, and all the healthcare professionals will be advising, and monitoring your progress. Are you by and chance diabetic? I ask this as it is common for some people with liver disease who are over weight, to become insulin resistant.
What ever advice is offered, please take seriously. I know it's easy for consultants and doctors to tell you to lose weight and be done with it. I would throw this back at them, and ask to be referred to a dietitian. Working with this person will help greatly.
Good luck, please keep us up-to-date with your progress.
Thanks Richard64 for advice. Yes I am diabetic type 2. My gp told me that my hba1c 41. Which, as per him, is well controlled. Do i ask gp for dietion or gi Dr. I have app with gi on 14 March? Anything to particularly avoid while waiting for dietition?
Hello again, sadly doctors for years have been simply saying, don't drink, give up smoking, and loss some weight. What they often forget to tell you that there is help and advice out there, and in some cases a GP can refer you.
My wife was over 16 stone (101 kilograms) and was suffering with Hiatus Hernia and Acid Reflux. The consultant she was seeing said the same old stuff, "Loss some weight, and if it doesn't get any better in about 6-months see your GP again". At this point I sort of said, is that it? Is there no other treatment options available? It was at this point he said he could write a letter of referral to the hospitals dietitian. This he did. There are so many different diet plans out there and it's a big business. The dietitian referred her to Slimming World, she's been going there for the past 6-months and has lost 2-stone.
I hate it. Have you any idea how many shopping trips I've been on to buy smaller sized clothes for her? Traipsing around 6 different clothes shops, trying on different clothes, and then going back the to first shop again. Finally buying the second outfit she tried on, only for it to live in the wardrobe for 6-months because she didn't really like it anyway.
Good luck with all this, and if by chance your married, then your husband has my sympathies about all those shopping trips yet to come. Good Luck

If you have a liver condition, there are some special considerations you may need to make in your diet to stay nutritionally well and to help to manage your condition. Some of these are specific to certain liver diseases, others relate to how advanced your liver disease is. We therefore always suggest that people should discuss their specific dietary needs with their own doctors in the first instance.
Best wishes
