Hi seansmum72

Welcome to our forum.

Are you under the care of a liver specialist? It is important that a consultant sits with you and explains about your diagnosis.

We have some general information about cirrhosis that may be useful;

britishlivertrust.org.uk/li...

If you would like to call the helpline we can have a chat. It is open Monday to Friday 10am to 14.45. It can get busy as it is only me and one line but keep trying!

Take care

Unfortunately very few of us on this forum got any warning about having cirrhosis prior to being diagnosed with it. There really isnt any advice to give as cirrhosis is untreatable. They only thing you can do is make sure you eat a diet appropriate for your condition and dont put anything in your body to aggravate the liver. Keep up with the bi yearly scans tho. That is important. I'm sure there are meds you take for the diabetes and thyroid so that can be difficult. My advice would be to see a dietician and talk to the doctors to make sure any meds you are taking are safe for your liver.

I have cirrhosis due to autoimmune hepatitis which was only picked up when I had my yearly diabetes blood tests and they discovered that I was anaemic. I also have type 2 diabetes and an underactive thyroid due to a partial thyroidectomy and radio iodine treatment. I also have fibromyalgia which causes terrific pain but I can't take painkillers anymore due to the cirrhosis. I saw a dietician at the hospital for advice as the diabetic diet doesn't really go with the liver diet. I hope you see someone soon who can give you the appropriate advice. Deb

Hi Seansmun72,

I have exactly the same diagnosis as you, diagnosed March 2018. I too wasn't given any information just diet and exercise. That isn't easy if you have mobility problems and thyroid/diabetes problems. Since then I have read all I can and it seems to me that although you wont be able to cure the Cirrhosis, you can stop it getting worse if you can reverse the fatty liver. That obviously involves going on a specific diet that is suitable for your health issues.

wayne@fattyliverfoundation.org seems to give good advise for this. Its quite restricting and I am finding it hard, but at least it is something we can do. Good luck.

food is restricted enough ( i may as well not eat) as they also think i now have celiacs as well as everything else, they have offered no advice on diet and exercise and am still waiting (they forgot to book the appointments) for both an endoscopy and to see the diabetic clinics so am on hold at the minute I am also under investigation for fibro but have not been informed on pain relief I am just assuming that its all a no no now.

Hello again,

Regarding diet; we do have a general publication that may be helpful;

britishlivertrust.org.uk/li...

However, If you have a liver condition, there are some special considerations you may need to make in your diet to stay nutritionally well and to help to manage your condition. Some of these are specific to certain liver diseases, others relate to how advanced your liver disease is. We therefore always suggest that people should discuss their specific dietary needs with their own doctors in the first instance. They may be able to then refer you to a hospital registered dietitian for more guidance and a plan.
