To follow up on my labelling question, are people aware that a lot of alcohol beverages contain animal products?

I knew Guinness contained Isinglass. Which is fish bladders. But I hadn't looked to much into other drinks. Wouldnt surprise me tho

This is what is in wine:-

Blood and bone marrow

Casein (milk protein)

Chitin (fiber from crustacean shells)

Egg albumen

Fish oil

Gelatin (protein from boiling animal parts)

Isinglass (gelatin from fish bladder membranes)

Great plan, I am surprised that they did not make the association in the hangover study.

Wife of Grank replies - hells bells - have a dairy allergy to casein. Didn’t that know it’s in wine. I stopped drinking because it made me ill, amongst other reasons (alcohol links to estrogen driven breast cancer which I’ve had twice). Only eaten ‘pure’ for many years but we both got cancer.

Those are things that *could* be in alcohol.

Mostly they are used to filter the alcohol and won't be in the end product.

There's a lot of alcohol that doesn't use those things. The German purity law means that most European beers don't use animal products.

Dave,

With respect, the point is that you should have the right to know.

I am aware of the Reinheitsgebot, I am abstinent.

Oh I absolutely agree. Just clarifying.

in reply toDave5

That’s clarifying the label, not the drink.

Guinness does not use animal products in its manufacture any more as of last year.

Youd think alcoholics would be less nutritionally deprived with all that in there? Sounds like a hearty Scottish stew.

Wow - I didn't know this and find it, um, stomach-turning. I just asked several vegetarian and vegan friends and they had no idea, either. Time for another public relations campaign, Mark, you can add this to your long list.

I think that those who make the choice to be vegetarian or vegan have a right to be better informed.

I'm a veggie ( have been for 30 years,) I knew about this. Its like when a chef makes a consommé, they need to clarify it to remove impurities, so they use proteins, like albumin from egg to bind to the gunk and then remove it. They used to use animal skins like a muslin cloth to filter it, not sure if they still do. Anyway, I don't drink due to my broken liver, but I used to check which wines were OK.

I'm sure there are a lot of new vegans ( as is the fashion) who don't know about this. You're right people should have this information. X

In Carluccio’s yesterday and a few vegan wines were listed which intrigued us.

Grank,

I trust the food was good and thanks for pointing it out. But the information was on the menu not the bottle itself.

It bothers my wife that they even throw dairy products into crisps and sweets. Reading labels for everything now. I suppose the manufacturers have to find a use for surplus dairy production.

Mmm, sounds delicious...not. I'm glad I mainly drink tea and water

I just had lunch with two vegans. Just the *possibility* that there could be even *trace* amounts of any of the ingredients that Mark listed was really upsetting to them. I’m glad this subject has been brought up, I’m going to spread the word as much as I can.
