Hiya can anyone tell me or post links to information on having surgery when you have cirrhosis. The stuff I'm finding is far to complicated to understand. Thanks in advance.

Hi Mags, the answer is yes you can have surgery with cirrhosis. As long as the doctors/surgeons are aware they can make allowances for it in the drugs they give etc etc. Yes there can be higher risks involved due to some of the complications of cirrhosis, for example having low platelets, and these will all be taken into account when preparing for surgical procedures.

Thank you.

Forget about google, talk to the people who have been medically trained and are experts in their field. They will give you the answers. When you are given the consent form, you are good to go.

Hi you will be put on the transplant list and they will ring you when they get a liver you will go in and they will prep you for surgey whilst this is happening they will be checking the liver out to make sure it is good if it is not you will be sent back home, if it is good you will be taken down to theater the time you are in there can be between about 6-10 hours depending on what they find my wifes first transplant took a long time as they could not get her liver out of her her second transplant 5 Days late was a lot quicker.

Straight after surgery my wife felt a lot better and looked about 10 years younger it does take a bit of time to recover but she now feels about as good as she did before it all went wrong

Try not to worry about it they do loads of transplants and are now very good at it, after you have had it done you will thing what was all the worring about

Hi Dave, Mags isn't a transplant candidate, she is potentially going to be having a hip replacement operation and it's more this she is asking about.

Thanks Dave, I was referring to having hip surgery and the complications having cirrhosis has. Im glad everything went well for your wife.

Hi Mags72,

I guess the only thing I would suggest you do - is to see make sure your surgical team knows that you have liver disease before they set up your surgery. It doesn't hurt to see if your liver team and your surgery team can consult or at least do a little back and forth. Although here in the US, that can be dependent on whether you are staying within the same healthcare group.

I am aware that some of the issues surgery has with liver disease has to do with bleeding due to poorer clotting times and the always present issue of drugs that are easier on the liver.

Best wishes to you,

Mary
