Hi Tommy,
If you have cirrhosis clear diet guidance is very important. Here are links to our publication 'Diet and liver disease' and also 'The Patient Charter' which details the care you should expect to receive if you are diagnosed with a liver condition in the UK;

If you have a liver condition, there are some special considerations you may need to make in your diet to stay nutritionally well and to help to manage your condition. Some of these are specific to certain liver diseases, others relate to how advanced your liver disease is. We therefore always suggest that people should discuss their specific dietary needs with their own doctors in the first instance.
I did have a conversation with my doctor and told him what I had read because I had lost weight with worry and not eating after googling which scared the life out of me and his exact words where to me after me saying to him I cant even have a Chinese he said who said that he said to me you have a Chinese if you want a Chinese meal just try not to drink .
My partner has cirrhosis and never saw a dietician after his diagnosis. His consultant said he could basically eat a "normal" diet as long as he avoided having foods with a low nutritional value like crisps. Everyone's situation is different, however, and they should follow the advice they've been given by their health professionals.
As soon as my hubby was diagnosed he asked about seeing a dietician. His local consultant said "Oh you are way ahead of us!" and that was it, never to see a dietician. When hubby was referred to Edinbugh a year or so later we asked the question again and at the same clinic appointment hubby got to see a liver specialist dietician who did a full work up on him - measuring his height, weight, muscle mass on his arms, grip strength test and more. Hubby was deemed to be malnourished and suffering from muscle wastage so was put onto a special eating plan to enable him to fuel properly, avoid long fasting periods and with additional carbs and proteins into his diet.A year on again he was prescribed Ensure supplements to further build him up prior to transplant listing - though the fact he gained weight and regained muscle mass actually contributed to him being delisted. He was initially 8 1/2 stone and rose to 11 stone - currently stable at about 10 1/2 stone.
Make sure you actually ask to see a dietician, it is crucially important to fuel properly and eat correctly when you have cirrhosis.
All the best, Katie
I have mentioned it to my doctor he told me to just concentrate on not having a drink I'm surprised my consultant hasn't mentioned it to me I'm working away 12 hour shifts I'm not showing any kind of symptoms I feel better than I've ever felt my weight is steady now at 87kg ultrasound came back good and satisfactory all bloods where good I'm still anxious and worried a bit I will mention it to my consultant when I see him if ever can get him
If your weight and muscle are good you just need to eat healthily, just watch the salt intake, nothing too major but if you do feel you run out of steam and lack energy or loose any weight then you need to make sure you get referred to a dietician.
All the best, Katie
