Hypocalcemia

I recently wrote the post ..”is my Dad on the way out”

So yesterday he had a consultants appointment and he was admitted to hospital straight away. The reason they gave was that he has 0 calcium in his blood.

He now thinks a lot of his symptoms are from the calcium deficit. I’m wondering what it’ll take for him to cop on.

He has a ct scan booked on Thursday and I guess we’ll know more then.

Is hypocalcemia a result of alcoholism?

Yes alcoholism can result in hypocalcaemia but there are also other possible reasons for having it.

Dr. Melissa Palmer's Guide To Hepatitis and Liver Disease:

"Osteoporosis is common to many liver diseases, especially cholestatic liver diseases such as primary biliary cirrhosis. It is important for all people with chronic liver disease to consume foods rich in calcium and/or to supplement their diets with this mineral. However, it is important to remember that calcium supplementation alone will not prevent osteoporosis. Other factors, such as cigarette smoking, lack of exercise, excessive alcohol consumption, and abnormal hormone levels, play roles in the development of bone loss. Alcohol has been shown to be directly toxic to bone cells and may impair calcium absorption. Thus, it is especially important for people with alcoholic liver disease to take calcium supplementation, in fact, as stated above, it is a good idea for all people with chronic liver disease to take both calcium and vitamin D supplements."

Thanks for that. Hopefully we’ll have some results by the end of the week.

Thanks.

Low calcium is curable. If it was that low he should be in hospital getting a calcium infusion to correct levels. You can also correct it via calcium carbonate pills called calcichew on a longer term basis. For a non drink related reason im doing the second reason.
