Hubby saw Hepatology Registrar yesterday. We have some great news to share. Hubbys liver is no longer Decompensated, it is now compensated 🎉 so he has gone from stage 4 ARLD to stage 3 ARLD 🎉. The hepatic encephalopathy systems have gone, so he is no longer on that medication. The Ascites & Odeoma have also gone. The lymph nodes they previously discovered in 2021 also seem to have disappeared. The swollen oesophageal varices have shrunk in size, which the registrar confirmed is why hubby was put on the Carvedilol. Hubby has been suffering with diarrhoea for the past few months, the registrar says it could be related to his pancreas, so is going to do some further tests. His peripheral neuropathy is currently under control on 150mg of Pregabalin twice a day. Hubby has not had a drink for 17mths now. He said it is still tough and he found himself out side a shop earlier this month, ready to go in and buy some cider. He said he sat in the car for a few minutes contemplating it, but talked himself out of it and drove home without going into the shop.
I am so proud of hubby, for those who have been following our story, you will remember that when he was admitted to A&E in June 2021, that his Hepatologist was ready to bring in the palliative care team if hubby carried on drinking. He was told if he carried on drinking he would not see Christmas 2021. He was skin and bone and weighed just 8st1lb. He was very sick. He now eats like a horse and has regained all of his weight.
His personality has changed too. He is back to the man I married. I am beginning to like him again. Which may sound harsh but in the last 5+ years of his drinking he was horrible.
I am getting my man back, which is great, as we have been together 36years. Anyway I thought I would share our good news with you all

Aw. Fantastic news. I am so happy to read this update. Your Hubby has done so well and just goes to show that with determination and medical help, what can be achieved by ceasing the alcohol. Sending a virtual hug to you and your family
that is truly wonderful news you must both be absolutely elated Good luck moving forward and keep up the good work It’s great to hear some good news for a change 😀xx
What amazing news! It’s never too late to turn things around which gives me hope as my hubby is currently on a path to destruction and even though diagnosed with cirrhosis and on 6 monthly appointments and scans is refusing to give up alcohol. I just don’t think he has reached that wake up call yet much to my dispair but is lovely to read such a good news story like yours ❤️
Thats fantastic well done to your hubby for not giving in.Thinking of you also it hasnt been easy for you either but you both have a second chance which is wonderful
That is fantastic news and you have answered a question I’ve been asking for a month which was can I reverse F4 fibrosis/ Cirrhosis? Thank you and great to hear good luck
This is really lovely to read. So pleased for both of you. I do remember your journey, and how desperate you felt. Your husband has made a fantastic recovery. I’m sure your support has been pivotal. Onwards and upwards!!
that is incredible. I see a lot of our story in yours, my partner diagnosed 22.12.21 admitted to hospital over Xmas for 3 weeks, very poorly. I was basically told by a nurse that in 'cases like his there is nothing we can do but send them home and try and make them comfortable'. He is still decompensated and now listed for transplant but very stable and bloods still improving all the time. Like your husband he is a changed man, calm, funny and rebuilding his relationship with our daughter which was at breaking point because alcohol had really taken its toll on him and he was pretty horrid. I hope your husband continues to improve and how great that he can talk to you about the challenges he faces staying away from alcohol (my partners drink of choice was cider too, even now when someone opens a canned drink it makes me feel a bit wobbly).Best of luck to you all x
That’s fantastic news....well done to you both. Him for stopping drinking and you for supporting him. It’s amazing what the liver can do when it’s treated well.
That’s fantastic news! Well done both of you. I’m sure it will give strength to others on here who have been going through tough times. Thank you for sharing 🥳
Hubby has Compensated Alcohol Related Liver Disease. The Hepatologist said his liver will never go back to completely normal/healthy, as he has damaged it too much and has caused scarring in his liver. They will continue to monitor him as the scarring can cause/become cancerous. My hubby gave up drinking 13/6/2021, we are now just over 17mths down the road. I asked the Hepatologist about what things I still need to list when I am asked about hubbys current medical conditions. Liver Disease was on the list but he has gone from Decompensated to compensated.
me again, thanks for the reply! I don’t never had acsites, odeoma, no nothing! Absolutely no symptoms at all! Still waiting for my letter from my appointment 3 weeks ago, was promised I’d have it today! Still no letter! Just want to know how deep in the liver my cirrhosis really is! Never looked/ felt better in my life all my loss are perfect. I’m so confused!
I havent posted for a while, but I remember your first post and look how brilliantly this has turned out for you both.
I think you deserve a medal for hanging on in there also your husband. It's been a long old struggle but so worth it for you both. Really made my day. Thank you for sharing the latest good news.
He's being honest with you too. A gentle reminder of how far he has come, might put off any future temptation. Remind him that so many people on here are rooting for him too.
I'm coming up to 5 years abstinent next February, touch & go - no TP, but somehow with determination & help from Medical pros' Decompensated to Compensated looking back now, I am amazed I feel how I do. I never ever thought getting better, (well as good as it gets), was an option. So hubby needs a pat on the back like you too.
Wow that is fantastic news I am so happy he has made such a huge improvement in his health and overall wellbeing . Thank you for not giving up on him and being such a great support to him.
what wonderful news! I read through your posts here. I am new here. Caring for my brother who has alcoholic end stage liver disease. He gets pretty bad episodes of hepatic encephalopathy. Can even add 2+7 when he’s got it, tremors get worse, wrtitjg becomes impossible and he gets very lethargic and sleeps a lot. He also is more spaced out and passive. He’s so different when the HE episode subsides and ammonia is removed by bowel movements via Lactulose. He’s on Lactulose and rifaximin to help remove toxins. I have been reading about diet. Given that your husband improved so much can you tell me what kind of diet he has been on? Vegetarian or meat based? Did you do anything else to help create conditions for health to assist the liver? Was your husband stage 4 initially? Was he told initially he would need a transplant ?
I am seeing that many people are being able to live with cirrhosis after an initial terrible diagnosis and avoid transplant. They’re healthier than ever and thriving. Many are vegetarians now…. Obviously NO alcohol EVER again. I know someone who had turned the liver situation around and he felt so great after 10 months that he got too confident and started drinking beers and he died a month later. The liver was working very well with what functional part was well but drinking again took him square 1 again and couldn’t recover. This was very enlightening for me to know. This way my brother can understand that he must maintain the conditions for health for ever, not until he feels well again.
Anything you can share about you and your husbands journey would be greatly appreciated. 🙏🏼
