sudden increase in ALT AST?

Hello I am looking for insights. I am 64 and have been on thyroid meds since age 18 for underactive thyroid. I had been on 100 mcg synthroid for 30 years but in January a new Dr lowered my dose to 75 and increased my Avorstatin to 40. High cholesterol runs in my family and I had it since childhood. I am thin and active, walking 4 miles per day with the dogs and then chase grandkids around. My liver tests have always been normal and when tested in April, were AST 21 (Normal for that lab is 10-35). Alt was 24 and normal is 6-29 I also have osteoporosis and take a once per week med for that. at that time. After April's tests my cholesterol had not changes but TSH was still low so my Dr lowered my Synthroid to 50. I was tested again this week and Dr upped my synthroid to 75 Monday - Friday bu said not to take it on Saturday and Sunday. This time my AST was now 36 and Alt was 47 and the Dr wants me to have a liver ultra sound next week. What could be the cause of the increase?. I do drink a glass of red wine and night but have done this for years and my liver tests were always in normal range, Could the lowering of the synthroid or the increase in statin be the cause? My cholesterol had not changed much 218 ( Normal < 200 ) LDL 119 {normal < 100)

Hello Debbie

I wouldn’t worry too much yet. Statins are known to cause elevations in LFTs and with the increase in that medication it could be the cause. It is good that your doctor wants an ultrasound, sounds like you have a good proactive doctor. Hope all turns out well, keep us posted.

Note unusual for hypothyroid people to have altered lfts, mine have been up in the many 100s for years.

I hope your GP didn't lower your synthroid dose on a TSH result, they get in a panic if TSH is below normal and immediately think we are overmedicated, wrong ! It's T3 level that's important.

If you want thyroid advice post your results on ThyroidUK forum so members can help.
