Ast and alt: Hi I have liver disease I... - British Liver Trust
Ast and alt
You need to ask your consultant that question as we are all individuals and tests are different for women /men age, weight. But it's very encouraging that your only going once every six months ☺
Are you taking iron pills? My urine got reddish when I took them.
When you have bloods done they should let you have a printout of all the tests and results. Alongside each result, most labs put the 'normal/acceptable' ranges in brackets. If your GPs quibble about giving you the result - especially if you are not asking for it straight after the test, you may have to pay a small fee for photocopying, but ask about this. My practice has started quibbling about copying the printouts, even straight away, but I'm sure we do have a 'right' to a copy, and when I quibbled back the Receptionist gave me a copy.
Also contact the 'British Liver Trust' who host this site, [follow 'BLT' logo at top of page, or Google BLT to get contact details to talk to their advisors] they are very helpful.
Hope this helps/
As per the other replies, get a copy of the results. As you get them through your gastro, asked to be copied in on all results. He/she will have a secretary or ask him/her at the next appointment. My gastro always copies me in on everything, including US & gastroscopy. He has even started writing letters direct to me, covering some aspects, explaining things.
There is a lot information missing to give you a really good assessment. When you say liver disease, what type? Hepatic Steatosis (fatty liver), F2-F3 (ALD), has it progressed to cirrhosis? AST and ALT are released when the hepatocytes are injured or damaged. The AST and ALT will leak out into the bloodstream causing an elevated AST and ALT. However, your cells are constantly dying off and resetting, which is normal. So AST and ALT can be elevated at specific times higher than others. What you want to see, is a trend of a downward number, for example 160, 100, 80, 50, back in range. They will fluctuate, even healthy livers will spike an ALT or AST once in a while due to diet, exercise, even the time of the day. I had a 5 point higher ALT and AST than I did when I had blood work in the morning. Did 2 in one day to see. At your point, your liver should be doing much better, Was their permanent damage recorded on a fibroscan, biopsy, MRI, CT, US?
