Blood results.

Had a blood test on 10th May and some of the results proved abnormal.

Serum total protein 66g/L 68-87 abnormal

Serum ALT level 57u/ L 0-34 abnormal

Serum gamma GT level 67u/ L 5-36 abnormal

The doctor advised another blood test. 11th July. This time only the serum total protein came back abnormal 66g/ L 68-87.

And serum ALT level and serum gamma GT level weren't tested this time round.

Can someone explain these results as my surgery informed me that the 11th July blood tests were all clear and that no further action was required?

Hello Lydia1960,

Welcome to the forum where you will be able to get advice and support from others with experience of liver disease. However, this is not a medical forum and none of the members are qualified to diagnose or give specific medical advice.

Users are advised to NOT post test results or scans and request an interpretation from other members. This is clearly stated in the guidelines to both the British Liver Trust forum and Health unlocked. Test results vary according to both the individual’s whole health and the specific laboratory / medical team analysing the results. To avoid misinterpretation and undue concerns, results can only properly be understood by a qualified medical practitioner with full knowledge of your unique medical history and circumstances.

Please don’t be discouraged from using the forum as there are members with a great deal of understanding and knowledge of living with liver disease as a patient or carer. They will be able to give you the benefit of that experience with understanding and empathy that can only come from those with first hand involvement.

On the British Liver Trust website you will find a great deal of information about liver disease / health from trusted sources.

Thanks for this correction. Am going to ring my surgery tomorrow on this matter. Just wanted to see if anyone could qualify those blood test results.. understood. I’ll check out that website you mentioned.. thanks again..

Anyone can find the normal ranges on the net so you can. If you search on alt normal range you will see the normal range set your mind at rest and know the truth at the same time.

Did check out a few webpages with these on, but have been advised by health professionals that information on the net is not always reliable. But, yes, I can go there again and compare some webpages answers to one another.. thanks for the suggestion..

My Lab ( as many do) have different ranges for what falls into normal. For example our AST and ALT top range of normal is 50u/l and ggt 40. Your levels would only be consideted mildly elevated. What would be important is to find out what your AST is. As the ratio between AST/ALT ( known as the de ritis ratio if you want to research it) is a good bio marker for determining different things. Also keep in mind that certain things like smoking or medications can cause what are known as "transient elevations" in enzymes. These usually are identified when a medication is removed and the enzymes returns to normal. As always we are not Doctors here but sharing our knowledge can certainly open our minds to avenues of questions for a Dr We may not have thought of. It seems as though we need to sometikes direct medical professionals in the direction we need them to look.

Keep us updated and best of luck!

Thanks for this reply. I checked online about high levels of serum ALT and serum gamma GT. it suggested that further tests would be advisable. Going to get a liver function test and a complete blood count test. That should give a clear indication of what is happening to my liver.

I do take supplements so that might be a factor, but don't smoke and rarely drink. Your post has motivated me to take action and go seek out some further tests to find out if there is damage to my liver and, if so, what to do about it. The article I read did suggest taking milk whistle, curcumin and or thymoquinone to help restore the liver to health. Good antioxidants and helps to relieve oxidative damage, inflammation which, as I suffer from a high level of stress, might be the factor here..
