Hi, I've been taking Methotrexate 10mg/week) for my RA condition for the past several months. Before starting the medication, my GGT was within the range for Males. However, after taking the Liver Function Test, which includes the GGT test, it has jumped to 85. I've been advised to reduce the dose to 5mg. Could that work, or is it too small to have any affect on Rheumatoid Arthritis?

Hi. My husband is on methotrexate for polymyalgia and his December blood test showed his liver function to be low so his specialist stopped him taking it altogether until the liver was within normal functioning range which was about 6 weeks. Being off it didn't cause him major problems just the polymyalgia pain began to return. Now he's back on it and continuing to improve. So don't worry do as your specialist suggests. Yoga is very good apparently so we joined a class for the over 50s yesterday and hoping that will also improve his condition

I have been on methotrexate for approx 15 years for Rheumatoid arthritis and it has controlled my symptoms extremely well. However back in December my LFT was all over the place following tests I now have cirrhosis of the liver methotrexate induced which was certainly a blow. I am now in a situation where can no longer take methotrexate and there is a reluctance to start any other drugs because of my liver damage.

I understand completely. This is relatively new to us as he was only diagnosed with polymyalgia year ago. The medications always seem to cause side effects. The steroids he has been on and cutting back on over the year can cause kidney problems and the methotrexate which he's still on, causes liver problems. According to the specialist his steroids will finish next month then it's a matter of getting the methotrexate balance correct to keep him pain free from the polymyalgia and his liver healthy. I don't think it's going to be that easy we are under no illusion of that. But have to keep active and happy and positive ☺

Just make sure they monitor your bloods strictly. My rheumatologist kept telling me that all though they were deranged they were at an except able level. I now have reservations as clearly their exceptable level is a dangerous level

Thankyou we will make sure of that. Take care ... wish you well

Thanks for the great advice. Wish you well

PS .... my husband specialist is recommending that injects his methotrexate when he's off the steroids so that it bypasses his digestive system completely therefore less likely to effect his liver function

Great stuff. That's what he'll do then. Must protect his liver !
