Hi, I've had liver failure twice and have cirhossis and was given omeprazole 20mg 3 daily whilst in hospital and for 6 years after on a lower dose. I'm obviously no expert but a lot of people with liver disease take it but please double check with perhaps your pharmacist as their expertise is all about medication. It is widely used in many liver patients. Hopefully the other replies you get on this will put your mind at rest also.
As I understand it, post transplant patients shouldn't use it when also taking Prograf as it can interfere with the effectiveness of the anti rejection, so the doctors tend to prescribe Lansaprazole instead in most cases.
I daresay somebody else on here would be able to give a more detailed response though.
Hi Joe, yes l think I've seen you mention that before and wondered about it then. My level of expertise regarding this subject is quite limited, and I only really know what the guys at Birmingham QE and the drug leaflets tell me.
Hubby who has cirrhosis due to auto-immune liver disease and who also has numerous small cysts in one lobe of his liver takes Omeprazole (2 x 20mg per day) and has done for four years now. Protects his damaged stomach lining (portal hypertensive gastropathy) and oesophagus from acid reflux and also protects his stomach from prednisolone steroid he has to take.
Katie do you mind if I ask if the nodes have gone down or disappeared over time, with his meds and the liver regenerated which years ago, we kept hearing was an organ that could in certain circumstances, regenerate itself if not taking or doing anything we shouldn't be. I exclude and don't discuss Cancer because I don't want to go down that path with a wrong comment or opinion? I do read many of the posts though, to educate myself, in case that day comes for me after my blood cell disorder stops improving. I know I already have neuropathy from BI, drugs prescribed since and incurable vitiligo according to my Doc!
Not sure what you mean by nodes going down. This chap asked a question about omeprazole with him having simple liver cysts and seeing as this drug (like many others) says not to be taken with liver issues.
My hubby has cirrhosis (diagnosed 2012), in subsequent ultrasound scans which he has every 6 months they have found several benign cysts in one side of his liver and also a small haemangioma in his other lobe. These have been commented on in his last two or three ultrasounds and continue to be present.
Couldn't comment on whether hubby has had any regeneration of liver tissue. No one has been able to tell us how damaged his liver actually is.
Doctors say his cirrhosis is due to burnt out AIH.
He is only on :- Lactulose and Rifaximin (for Hepatic Encephalopathy symptoms), Omeprazole, Prednisolone steroid (to keep Auto-Immune Hepatitis down), Calcium Supplement (Adcal D3) & penicillin v (because his spleen has died following an embolisation operaton on aneurysms in Splenic Artery).
Katie, Sorry,,I mean shrunk, for gone down! When I got the chest infection just after Xmas, I was also given Prednisolone to take for 3 days only! Not told it was for anything else by doc who did a home visit, had to wait 2/3 days till I could get to pharmacy. Took that but not anti bio as said before. It may sound daft but I do go on "gut and neural instinct" a lot now, which seems to work for me.
That's why I'm happy with the Arko pharma with natural ingredients products. I looked up the Pred before taking but was surprised it was only a few days script. No neural effects that time either with the Levo. It was also same time monthly D3 was due. Thanks for reply.
Yes I see many words I recognise, dealing with,Crench,
Consults has not been easy, not so much, language, they just expect, you,to take what they prescribe wit no explanations. So it's cultural differences for me! Sambs- thanks again x
I was given exactly same looking pack by my Fr. GP? After I'd been dx cirrhosis, and put on propranolol After endoscopy. All mid 2014. They all messed with my brain, and counteracted with Levothyroxine which Ive been on since 2000! From my perspective, as a patient also, I'd suggest it depends what other conditions you may have plus what other Meds you take.
