Running in a thunderstorm!

Pre-run faffage this evening mainly consisted of googling ‘should I run in a thunderstorm?’ I came to the conclusion that a) it is too hot to run at any other time so it’s now or never; and b) I’m not carrying a fishing rod or golf club so it’s probably going to be ok.

And it was. The photos don’t do it justice at all. Of course they can’t capture the sound of the thunderclaps overhead or the delicious rain striking my skin; but the magical light and lightening hasn’t come through either.

It wasn’t plodding sort of weather. I ran the 3k in three bursts with a couple of minutes breather and photo shoot between each. At one point I was mid- open field when a particularly loud thunderclap sounded, making me jump and move a lot faster than I usually do! Then another very quick dash through the metal kissing gate before another lightning strike!

Despite the late hour and rain, I was burning up. I stood under the hosepipe for a bit, enjoying the cool water down the back of my neck. Blimey it is hot out there folks!

Happy running; and resting, too xxx

I remember running round the garden in my swimming costume in a thunderstorm as a kid, with my parents stood on the doorstep holding a towel and laughing at me. There were plenty of objects higher than me for the lightening to aim for. Maybe that’s the trick?

I take it you wanted to run round the garden and your parents didn’t just boot you out?! Hehe. I think avoiding holding metal objects and avoiding being the highest point in the landscape is probably wise...

Yes, I wanted to 😄

Personally, I wouldn’t chance running in a thunderstorm. But then we were fortunate that the south coast didn’t reach such high temperatures yesterday! I bet you wished you could hug that snowman again like in your name photo!

That would be heaven. He could have come to bed with me last night too, if he wouldn’t melt - and if he existed!

A thunderstorm is practically a daily occurence where I live and im caught out often on an evening run...im still here. Makes for a dramatic run. Prefer early mornings in the heat....given up trying to sleep and going running now.

Not heard anything from you for some time Franglaise, glad you are still running, even in the heat and thundery weather.

Hi Al...im still around. Dont contribute as much to the forum as life here got busy when a friend asked me to run his business. Enjoying being busy, not enjoying running and sleeping in the heat...hope life is treating you well and you are enjoying running?

Yes I am still enjoying my running, yesterday Sunday I ran a SIX. K would you believe that me running a 6K, according to Mapmyrun I ran it in 44.25, the 5K split being 36.41 and that's not all, two weeks ago I ran my first full 5k Parkrun at Dunfermline on their 4th anniversary in a time of 34.16, had a bit of birthday cake 🎂 after the run, three days later I ran my PB 5K in a time of 32.23, so as you see I have not given up running. 😊 🏃. Bit dodgy running in a thunderstorm ⛈ lightning 🌩 is dangerous.

Wow...very impressive reading...you are doing amazing! Well done, and look at your tines!

I have a 10k in 2 weeks time....bit worried about the heat though.its at 7 in the evening and not always cooling off then but there may be some sea breeze.

The lady who wanted to do it and talked me into it has pulled out! I had a slight suspicion that she would let me down, so no surprise....this is life.

She talked you in to run a 10K then 'chickened out' if you don't want to run it just don't.

As I don't have a parkrun this Saturday due to a event taking place there I was thinking of running a 7k locally, the 6K was OK, I have a metromone app and set it at 162 steps a minute, hence the 44.25 for 6K, another 7 and a bit minutes of running I think I could manage.

Hmm... that’s naughty of her. At least now you can run/not run according to how you feel and noone else!

Yes, I was a little miffed....but im no quitter and not injured and have been training so I have to give it a go. My only worry being the heat.

A few years back there was a boy at the school where my sister worked, struck by lightning in the bus queue. It’s not a regular occurrence and it can happen anywhere. People get hit by cars much more often and we are not told not to run on or near roads, just to take sensible precautions! We can’t live our lives worrying about what might happen. Well done for getting out there. I’ve not run since Monday, it’s too hot 🥵

It really is. Even the nights are a woolly blanket, there isn’t any breeze to be had!

Wow the lightening did make you run fast! Well done. I spent the last thunder storm worrying about my pirate flag. Someone threw out a fishing rod so I re-purposed the thin end of it as a flag pole 🏴‍☠️ I was hoping the lightening wouldn’t use it as a path to earth. 🏃‍♀️⚡️👏

I did the same thing last week, but got absolutely soaked on my run as the rain poured down. At least the thunder abated once the rain hit 😂. Some of the boomers sounded pretty close so I was glad to get into the campground with lots of trees and out of the clearing I had to run to to reach the campground. It got the heart rate up for sure.

It really does! Not that I need any help with that 😝

I did... next time there is a downpour, I’m in!

I remember working outdoors in Australia during a particularly bad thunderstorm. We were doing some work on a hospital. My manager said it was too dangerous to continue and sat in his car eating a sandwich.

Three of us were stood outside the hospital talking... then BANG! And when I say BANG, I mean BANG! It was like the hospital exploded, every car alarm was going off. The hospital had been struck by lightning. I've never been that close to it before, you just run, anywhere, any direction, you run and you run fast. My manager was crying with laughter.

It's so fast you wouldn't even know what had hit you.
