its great to get realise that my out-and-back runs reach deeper into my routes, as I progress on my return to C25k. I’m on week 4 Run 2. Everything feels still fairly easy, but I got to the swans-and-ducks fish lakes and stream and train line sections, for the first time in this instalment of the C25k plan.
I love seeing the further distance I cover, especially as week three distances were shorter. So week 4 feels like great progress!
At some point between week 5 and 8 I will reach the halfway point for a circular version of this route, and I will then switch and run on to suddenly cover the circular route! Voila!
Looking forward to my Switcheroo, a big milestone!
Does anyone else prefer out-and-back sections from circular routes for that reason?
happy running everyone!

I did my Couch to 5k mainly as an out and back along country lanes towards an A-road! My “switcheroo” equivalent was getting all the way to the A38 and kicking the kerb of the pavement before turning around! It’s funny the little milestones we create for ourselves!
I like a bit of a mix of our and back and circular. My absolute favourite is a point to point run where you can really feel the distance as you leave somewhere behind and run to someone else. That requires good public transport or a helpful support car though!!!
Yeah, I’ve not done any runs involving public transport. I think I’d be very self conscious, but I will put it on my bucket list! For a holiday run, perhaps.
My favourite one invoked me getting a train and then running to my sister’s house 10km away. MrU met me there with clean clothes and stuff to have a shower. We drove home together after. The traffic was awful so I actually beat MrU there which was quite satisfying (although I was stuck in stinky run kit for longer than I’d have liked!)
That gives me some exciting ideas! 💡 thank you! (Also, the simple thing of going OUT with public transport to run BACK, somehow did not cross my mind until now. )
Oooohhhhh, I’ll need to do some weekend map planning …. Exciting! Thanks for the inspiration!
Well done you... I nearly always do a circular route... but did when beginning C25K,do some out and back... often going too far and having to walk quite a bit at the end of the run times!
LOL I’m now conditioned to hear that lovely bell (is it louder in this recent version? And it doesn’t have just one ding, but rather “DING DING DING DINNNNGGGGG”), and once I hear that, my body just turns around!
I've never done out and back! (Even when I'm driving I prefer to come back a different way if convenient). I live near a bypass - so have lots of options for different length runs.
I'm back on your BPM Run 145- 155. It's great for my pace.
That’s so nice to hear! Yeah, it’s currently my favourite playlist, as well. And the very slight changes of pace between songs keep me on my toes, literally! 😃
What an interesting post! All of my runs during C25K were on the same there and back route in the fens, alongside a man made river, or ‘drain’. It was a pretty route, along the grassy bank, with a gate that had to be opened and closed. I didn’t mind the repetition. The shortest circular route was about 4K and I didn’t get anywhere near that on my C25K runs. I clearly remember shortly after graduating I decided to do this circular run. It felt like an adventure as I headed out of the village for the first time, smiling with anticipation and sporting my new road running trainers, head held high! So I never had the ‘switcheroo’ moment you’re describing but I do understand that it’s a huge milestone!
