After several days on the road, travelling to see my in-laws, I finally managed to run this morning. By the time I left the house the sun was beating down, over 20C. I've put on weight recently - my clothes are feeling tighter - and as I set out I could feel the extra heaviness.
The first km or so was in the blazing sunshine. I was wearing running leggings as we'd been warned there are a lot of ticks round here this year so no chances taken but I missed the feeling of air on all my limbs. Finally we reached the forest, bliss.
Every time we visit I remember how much I enjoy running here. Underfoot are paths of hard, compacted sand. It's mostly flat with enough short, gentle ups and downs to make it interesting and the trees are just lovely. The contrast between sunshine and cool shade made such a difference. Only downside was that the mosquitoes love the damp shade under the trees too. My legs were running, my arms flailing to swat the darned things away!
We neared 3km and were still a way from home so decided to take a short cut through the sports ground. We didn't realise that since our last visit the whole area has been fenced, so the detour to a gap where we could get out took us longer than if we'd just run along the road.
Never mind, I covered 4km rather than the 3km I'd originally set out to do. Also, this was my fastest run for a long time. I put this down to the running surface rather than any additional effort on my part. My route at home is grassy paths through fields which take a lot more negotiation than where I ran today. I suppose you could call that 'training'! 😂
