A plan for no Plan

Well, we're home now and with such a beautiful morning it was time for a run.

We planned to do 3k but it was just so glorious we upped that to 5k. We are blessed with lots of footpaths over the fields, today's route was one we haven't done since last autumn. The huge rainfall meant that it was a boggy mess when we went away but now it's dried out and passable.

Oh, it was fantastic to be running on 'home turf' (not that I own the land, thanks to the farmer for sharing it). The sun was shining, everywhere was green, the mud was gone, wonderful. Then, around 2 km into the run, we got to the bit that doesn't get used much by dogwalkers.

The winter's mud may have gone but there were deep ruts, some from horses' hooves but mostly from tractors. I had to walk a lot of the way, it was just too uneven to run safely. This km was hard work and slow. Never mind, it gave me the opportunity to catch my breath and lower my heart rate.

The rest of the way was much better, a concrete road then short grass, then up onto the sea wall and home. It's so good to be back!

Regarding plans, I've been mulling over the Nike 10k Plan. We're only going to be home for a few weeks then back on our travels. I've got just under 4 'weeks' to go on the Plan but we won't be home for that long until around late June so I'm putting it on hold until we're here for long enough to make significant progress. I know that by then it'll probably be getting warmer which isn't great for longer runs but who knows, given the British climate. If I have to start again from scratch in the autumn so be it, I like the early bits of these plans, not so terrifyingly challenging 😂

It was lovely out today! 5k for me too, but I bet it didn’t feel as sweet as yours did. Running on familiar ground when you’ve been away so wonderful. Glad to have you back, even if it’s for a short time,

Your no plan plan sounds like a perfect way forward. Will you have the opportunity for more holiday runs? Your latest ones looked amazing!!!

Whether we run depends on where we are. Not sure where the next stop will be but as long as there's a flat bit with not too many cars and I remember to bring my running gear we'll be there.

Remembering to bring stuff is a challenge, we'd somehow taken all our warm waterproof gear back to England, forgetting that it can get very chilly on night time crossings. When we crossed from Sardinia to Sicily I was on deck doing my overnight watch wearing my pj bottoms, husband's spare jeans, t shirt, jumper, lightweight windproof jacket, beanie and wrapped in a blanket and sleeping bag! I'd given my jeans to my son to take back to England with him (he was with us for a few days) as there was a heatwave when we arrived. Honestly, I've been warmer since I've been back in England 😂

I hadn’t thought about kit! When I go away now, half my suitcase is taken up with running stuff!! Hopefully it’ll work out, although you’ll be able to pick up when you’re back I’m sure.

The weather is totally unpredictable at the moment. Typical April!!!

Packing for running is so much easier in summer - shorts, vest, socks, bra and belt. Soft water bottle if I remember. Wear my second best running shoes to travel. Unlike in the winter when it really is a challenge if you've only got a small cabin bag. Amazing how many clothes you can wear if you have to :)

Love it.... welcome home! Good to have you back safely, even for just a while ! I can empathise with the ruts!

Made harder to navigate, often because they are hard... and when dry, quite a dangerous obstacle. Walking is the key or balancing, like an inelegant ballerina on the narrow tops!

A plan for no plan sounds just great...just taking it as it come... running when and where you are able. What a lovely way to start heading into the warmer, drier???? months:) xxx
