Thank you to everyone who has encouraged me this far! Thought I would update you on my current situation and plans for the next few weeks or so.
I had a very successful month in June, at least at the start, bagging my first 10k. But I felt a bit lost after that, not being on a plan at all. So I went out and ran what I felt like doing, which often meant not knowing what I was going to do until I had finished! It worked - got me my third 10k a couple of days ago and I got some miles on. But one week I unwittingly ended up massively overdoing the +10% rule, and other times wasn't clear if I was running easy or not.
Anyway it gave me plenty of time to think about what comes next and I've decided: it is the NRC Half-marathon plan, but with a twist!
I'm not ready (or logistically able) to run five times per week, nor am I sure that I want to run 13 miles either.
But checking out the plan it gives me everything else that I want: guided runs, a mix of easy, speed and long runs, and the ability to not have to think about what I'm going out to do each time.
So here's the twist:
Each plan week will take me a calendar fortnight.
One easy run, one speed run, and a long run each week.
Until the plan reaches 10k, I'll do a 10k fortnightly to keep my hand in, with the official NRC long run the other week.
I'll take the long runs as far as I feel able or want to once I get past the 10k point in the plan.
Reserving the right to include a fourth run at the weekend if I decide to go to Parkrun.
I'll keep going with the plan until I fancy doing something different.
Committing to a month at the moment.
I'll keep going with the Pilates on some of my non-running days and in the meantime been experimenting with the beginner Yoga plan in the NTC app, so I'm keeping busy all things considered!

Hi Chris . Well that’s a pretty in depth plan and it reads very well. You are going to have a busy time. Please just remember not to burn yourself out.
However I think I know you a little better now and I’m sure you will conquer all of this with great success so good for you.👍👍
You are doing brilliantly. Just remember to take care of yourself. I’m excited to read all about it.
Thank you Folkylass, that's actually very timely advice - I've spent a couple of days taking it easy with a migraine. Hopefully better tomorrow and get out for the first of the plan runs!
Migraine! Oh that can be so debilitating. You have my sympathy as I suffer from migraines. Not as much as I used to…but I still get them and I not much for anything let alone running when one strikes.
I hope you feel better tomorrow and don’t push yourself too hard 👍😀.
Okay... after answering your post on Quest... I know what you are up to now!
You are doing exactly what is right for you... for my first HM I used a plan that one @roseabi out ogether for us... I tweaked that...and latterly like you used the NRC plan , before illness and issues stopped me. I could not run five times a week.. no way.. so tweaks.
It sounds like a super plan you have worked out and you have done wonderfully, so far...Any exercise on some rest days is going to pay dividends, truly... so many exercises to choose from., for specific areas of our running body... and mind. The mind set plays a huge part in how we approach these longer challenges.
I read a super reply on Catch Up Corner from GTFC ... who said, ..." I love running because it's our very own recipe. I add a bit of this here, a dash there, an occasional sprinkle elsewhere. It's my design, my recipe and my ingredients".
Hi Oldfloss, I think that's where the NRC app really comes into its own, allowing progress at the user's own rate! I've been desperate for some structure again, but without some flexibility would be more like a straitjacket.
Sounds like a good plan, I'm following the NRC HM plan although I went off plan a bit and these last few days I've done a lot of nothing. It is a good plan and I'm sure you'll enjoy the guided runs.
Sometimes we all need a lot of nothing! I did a chilled couch to 5k run yesterday instead of my planned plan run. Enjoy a super well earned recovery time!
Well done on you progress Chris. I love the guided runs in NRC, and your plan sounds really good, so much so that I wonder whether I might try something like it myself. I look forward to hearing about how it goes. I'm sure, using the wonderful NRC coaching that it will go really well
Sorry about your migraines-mine have been really bad just recently too. I think it’s the weather. Hoping yours will settle again.
Great plan. You’re going to have so much fun! The best thing about those Nike Run Club plans is they’re super adaptable so if you don’t fancy any of the runs on offer, you just choose something else! Can’t wait to hear about how you get on.
Thank you Miss Understanding, sorry to hear you have been suffering too. I'm certainly not looking forward to it being hotter again this summer I have been very fortunate not to get too many migraines lately but they are very debilitating as you will know.
Yes I think the adaptability is one of the biggest pluses! First run in the bag this morning, 15 minutes easy, which after not feeling so well was just what I needed!
