Out with the old, in with the blue….

Well, technically “in with the blue surf” but that doesn’t sound so catchy! Finally, after several unsuccessful attempts, I have new trainers. Look how pretty they are! They’re shiny. They’re full of promise. They’re a new relationship ready to start.

New shoes day is always a happy day here and this is a particularly good one. It’s been a while since I’ve bought trainers with help but today was the day to ask a professional. Brooks had an event on at a local running shop and there was a super helpful rep who guided me through the most suitable styles to try. These beauties wouldn’t have been on any shortlist of mine but they just felt so perfect on my feet that there was no competition with any other pair. There really is no substitute for running on a treadmill in the contenders to make it clear which are best and which size is right. I even got a cookie from the rep on my way out so I’m in a super good mood this afternoon!

Anyone else fancy sharing their shoes? New or old? I love looking at them all!

Those are lovely new shoes MissUnderstanding, I am sure you will get many miles/kilometers from them on your many runs, I suppose some runners who run +100 Kilometers a week will have to renew their running shoes at least 3 or more times a year, happy running. 😊 🏃🏾

Thank you! I think I’ve only every managed 100km in a month once or twice so hopefully they won’t need replacing too soon! Can’t wait to take them out for a spin.

They certainly are! I try not to let the design influence my choice of shoe but it’s very nice when they also happen to look good. The Adrenaline GTS model which came second in today’s test happened to match my leggings perfectly! If I’d been in the market for two pairs I’d have loved those as well!!

Aren't they gorgeous? Oh shoes, I started a shoes savings pot in January, so far there's only £23 in it, but for every run I add £1 so by the time I need new ones there should be a good chunk of money towards them, I'd love new shoes but don't need them yet 😔

MissUnderstandingAdministratorGraduate10 in reply to SueAppleRun

That’s such a good idea! I’m definitely nicking that!

This time, I’m thinking of it as money worth spending now so I can save on needing more physio sessions in future!

That's definitely a perfect reason for new shoes, my Sauconys have a lot of miles left in them though so I'm not in a hurry

I always wore Brooks until I changed to barefoot shoes. Your shoes are lovely. I've got my eye on some Altras, but need to get them fitted. A bit concerned about running in my very minimalist shoes (without socks!) in bad weather!

MissUnderstanding profile image
MissUnderstandingAdministratorGraduate10 in reply to Roxdog

I had a pair years ago when I tried to get into running but failed (because I kept trying to run like Dina Asher Smith in the sprint finals and very shortly coming to a breathless halt!). I’ve found I’ve been in between sizes before but these fitted just nicely. I’m glad I gave them a chance again!

I’ve heard really good things about Altras but never seen them in a local shop. Hopefully you can find a pair to try. I’ve been building up a spreadsheet of which size I am in the different brands!

OMG that's organised! Despite bring 5'3" with a small frame, I have big feet, but they're quite narrow. I usually have to buy a size 41! I'm sure my feet/toes have spread since I've started wearing barefoot footwear most of the time, but also suspect that the lockdowns, where I was working from home in slippers or bare feet, contributed. I actually read something about people's feet changing due to lockdowns. Hardly anyone was cramming their feet into silly 'work' shoes any more. So goodness knows what size I take now!

MissUnderstanding profile image
MissUnderstandingAdministratorGraduate10 in reply to Roxdog

I really like a bargain so it’s helpful to know I need a 6 in Nike and ASICS, 6.5 in Brooks and a 6.5 or 7 in Saucony for when sales come around! I couldn’t get on with Hoka or Mizuno but I wouldn’t rule out trying them in future.

Really interesting that people’s feet changed size. I can believe that. I almost never wear anything but trainers now and my work shoes are comfy Clark’s (size 5!).

Leotigris profile image
LeotigrisGraduate10 in reply to MissUnderstanding

that's so weird that the sizes are different for each - it would be so much easier if they would standardise their sizes!

MissUnderstanding profile image
MissUnderstandingAdministratorGraduate10 in reply to Leotigris

Agreed! I would ideally have liked a size 6 1/4 but that didn’t exist!!

Thank you! I’m on the bumpy road back from injury so it will be nice to have some new friends to keep me company. My lovely old GT 2000s which took me through my first 10k and HM will become my walking and gym trainers. I do feel a little sad moving them on but it’s time.

Thank you! I can’t wait! I’m probably holding off a few days after my knee had a tantrum on Monday but it’s so much better already that I don’t think it’ll be long. Report will be coming!

Yabbadabbadoo for pretty pretty shoes MissUnderstanding ! I get on very well with Brooks and mine have lasted really well. Currently have Cascadias for serious trails, Divides for less demanding trails and road-to-trail, and Ghosts for roads. (We won't mention the other shoes I've somehow acquired. Bargain-obsessed gremlins made me do it.)

Wishing you many, many miles of happy running! xxx

MissUnderstanding profile image
MissUnderstandingAdministratorGraduate10 in reply to Cmoi

Thank you! I think I may well be in the market for trail shoes soon if mine don’t stop giving me heel blisters. I’ve heard good things about the Cascadias! I think I’ve also got some of those bargain obsessed gremlins too… glad it’s not just me!!

Cmoi profile image
CmoiGraduate10 in reply to MissUnderstanding

I love the Cascadias on proper, more technical trails, find them a bit too sturdy on roads. Wore my Vinted bargain Decathlon trail shoes for yesterday's 10K and really liked them. Apparently the new version is even better. Current selection of shoes should last me years though, even accounting for running longer distances again.

Proper trail poles, however, are tempting, and as they're even pricer than shoes I'd have to get a bargain pair!

It was even sunny! A thoroughly nice afternoon. In an unrelated success, I also found chilli marmite thinking it had been discontinued so a top quality shopping trip all round!

Very nice shoes and great "colorway" as they can it these days. I have 2 pairs of Brooks in my collection GTS 21 and Glycerin. I wear them quite a bit.

MissUnderstanding profile image
MissUnderstandingAdministratorGraduate10 in reply to Freecloud

Thank you! I was super pleased that was the colour they had in. There are a couple of other but neither as nice as this version!

I didn’t try the GTS 21 but the Glycerin trainers were very comfy. I’ve got slightly narrow feet and they were just a little too wide for me. Apparently the Hyperion Tempo Max comes up a little narrower in fit which suits me perfectly.

I've just picked up my new running shoes. According to Adidas, they redefine forward motion! 😂😂

The soles are made by Continental - a tyre manufacturer!

😍😍😍 those are seriously smart! I love detail on the soles. Hope they’re as comfy as they are beautiful and you have a lovely time together! I’ll be interested to see whether or not forward motion gets redefined…that might have implications for next year’s GCSE and A level Physics planning! 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️

Thanks! They're very comfy and bouncy. I did have to laugh when I read the Adidas blurb! 🤣🤣🤣

So when I Started C25k, I had an ancient pair of Asics…complete with holes in the uppers…

In W4, I invested in a gait analysis and a new pair of Asics GT-2000…

A year and 400+ kms later…a pair of Saucony Omni 19…felt better than the Asics this time…

Last summer, another gait analysis…and a pair of Saucony Guide 14…

No photos of the ancient trainers survive, but below are the others…sense a colour theme? 😂💙

Oh and I’m size 8 (42)…

Blue trainers… L-R: Asics 2020, Saucony 2021, Saucony 2022/current

MissUnderstandingAdministratorGraduate10 in reply to LottieMW

That’s such a lovely set of shoes! Great colours. It’s interesting you’ve moved through different styles and brands. Gait analysis is just great for that isn’t it!

I’ve found it really nice looking back at my trainers. We’ve got an asics outlet nearby so almost all my shoes have been from there. I’ve had road hawks (which were my Zumba shoes when I started!), GT 1000s, GT 2000s and gel kayanos. All essentially black! My favourite pair of all is the GT 2000s that have just retired. We did a half marathon together! I think these new ones will need to run something significant to take that top trainer title-they may well be my Great North Run shoes in a few months time.

I’m lucky to have a small specialist running shop in town…(they’re based in south Wales and Bristol)… you don’t get the discounted shoes like the big chains, but to my mind small is beautiful…and I’ve been served by the same shop assistant each visit…she’s a local runner too! Sometimes you can get lucky with an end of season sale, but it’s my hobby and I’m happy to splash out on what I want!

It’s interesting that I defo had an over pronation when I started…but apparently I’m more neutral these days, so just a tiny bit of support is needed.

I binned the originals with holes 😂…the 2nd Asics are for general wear, and last years Sauconys are for my walks!

I love them all! 😊

I think it could well have been the Bristol branch that these came from…Moti by any chance? Just looked them up and apparently there’s a Cardiff branch too, I always try and buy from independent places where possible. Great service yesterday!

Glad most of your collection is still in service in some way or another! ❤️

MissUnderstanding profile image
MissUnderstandingAdministratorGraduate10 in reply to Dendev75

I’ll add “cushioney” to my vocabulary! Actually, it was a real struggle to explain what I liked and didn’t like about about different pairs of trainers I friend because I don’t have the right language for it!! Luckily the Brooks rep was able to translate “I like them to feel fresh and bouncy and light and not too squishy” as “please give me the Hyperion tempo max trainers please”!!!

Dendev75 profile image
Dendev75Graduate10 in reply to MissUnderstanding

I’d be the same ‘Some cloud like, cushioney, foamy but not too much springage shoes please’ 😂😂

very nice,, I love running shoes, old or new, they either have stories on good or bad runs or stories to begin on bad or good runs!!

I have a pair of vintage Brooks that I bought (second hand) because they were absolutely spotless and I love them,I think they stopped making them years ago, but they're so comfy!! I'll share a pic tomm 😂

MissUnderstandingAdministratorGraduate10 in reply to Hedgehogs123

Fantastic! I wonder which style they are? I had a pair of Ravennas years ago but they seemed to have been discontinued. I bought them and tried to get into running but failed. They became my walking trainers through the pandemic when I found them abandoned in the back of the cupboard!
