I'm building up to 10k....again....had a rubbish winter( when I'd planned to build up to a half marathon .) I did my first last June and eased off through that long hot summer thinking that I could use the Autumn to do lots of stamina training . Then I would be ready for an hm in early spring. What a beautiful plan! The reality was that in September I started coughing..... October and November brought an awful attack of hives and ghastly itchy eyes. Honestly I was prepared to rake them out. I've had 6 children and none of my childbirth experience was as awful as those eyes. It was soooo debilitating. By December they'd calmed down, not my skin or coughing tho so for a whole month I felt so run down I barely ran at all. I think I'm generally a cheerful pessimist, so I began to convince myself I'd never get my running back. With the help of various steroids and hydrocortisone I'm on the way up....and just so happy to be out there again. I run through woods and over heathlands and it makes me into a much nicer person!
I think I'm allergic to Winter tho I hate being cold as soon as I heat up I start itching. I have to end my runs in the cold north sea, to cool me down rapidly. Wearing neoprene gloves and socks does really help I have to admit.
So....my plan is to run x3 a week and build up to 10k again. Today was 5k in 44" (I'm slow) despite the drizzle I enjoyed it.

Hi welcome back. Wondered where you were. Sorry to hear about the trouble with your eyes, that must have been awful. You’re right taking it easy to start with and build up gradually. Spring time might suit you in between the two. Do you ever do wild water swimming? Don’t know why I’m asking as I can’t 🏊♂️. Glad your back agsin. 😊
I guess all my swimming is wild in that there is usually no one else around or in the water....we swim every where....lakes, rivers, streams , if it's warm in the air. I never expect the water ti be warm...I think the sea near me is 7'C at the moment. Believe me, I'm not in for long!
Good run for you today Mormor1 although I don't like the idea of ending any run in the North Sea unless it was a hot day in the sunshine in summer time, I think most people are allergic to winter.
Winter’s been tough for a lot of us! Wishing you a very happy journey back to 10k. The springtime flowers and better weather will make it so much nicer to be out!
Gosh Mormor that sounds horrendous. Is this something new? I’ve had itchy eyes due to hay fever and it’s not nice, but eye drops/antihistamines do the trick so it doesn’t last long. Yours sounded very debilitating. 😩
Good luck with your building back up. I’m in the same boat. This winter has been a real test. 🙄
Eye drops and antihistamines have sorted it till this year....no idea why it got so much worse..... hoping it all calms down and stops in the warmer weather. Coughing irritates everyone!
