How did your parkrun or (not)parkrun go?

Hello Everyone and happy weekend. Today is parkrun day, a free 5K event which takes place every Saturday morning all around the world. It is for everyone, slow, fast, able, disabled, big, small and everyone in between. Oh and don't forget about the super Mum's and Dad's who push their babies in buggies. You can walk, jog, run, run/walk, it's not a race, just a run in the park and loads of us here on Bridge to 10K do it religiously every Saturday morning.

Some of us may not be able to do a parkrun at the moment so until parkrun returns fully for everyone some of us will continue to take part on our own in a Virtual parkrun every Saturday morning called a (not)parkrun. Or if you are away on Holidays, prefer to run on your own, or do not have a parkrun close by you a (not)parkrun is perfect, please feel free to join in. Please post a little run report after your parkrun or (not)parkrun and let everyone know how you got on. The little run report can be done over a post parkrun coffee and treat/cake. (parkrun is all about the after run coffee and cake, and meeting friends old and new).

If you are a new graduate and would like to start, all you have to do is run, walk or jog at a parkrun or a 5K run/jog/walk (not)parkrun anytime today or tomorrow and write a little run report under this post. It's like a little community and it is good fun, sets you up nicely for the weekend. If you want to you can register on the parkrun website and you can log your 5K (not)parkrun. In fact you can log any 5K done during the week as a (not)parkrun.

For anyone whom has not done a real parkrun yet and if it is available to you, give it a try. It is the most wonderful community event. Saturday mornings will never be the same again.

Looking forward to hearing from all of you who ran in real proper parkruns and (not)parkruns. Happy running and have a lovely weekend.

Hi DamienairHope your day is going well. I've had a great week running. Managed my quest target of running 9k for the first time, and that has added to my highest Km week of c 27km total for the week exc tomorrow . It added up to a PB on Strava, yet to be confirmed on the PR site, probably a bit slower as there were a lot of runners today and I was a few seconds before going through the line, they all count!

My granddaughter and mum were also running today and I managed to keep them in sight!!!

And today was the first frost free morning and relatively dry too, a positive balmy 3.5°C.

Thank you Parkrun Sixfields Upton for getting the weekend off to a good start.

Update official time was 38.16 but some errors have crept in as my tag number was wrong by one!! Not sure how that could happen. Big turnout today c220.

Very well done on all your running during the week, your 9K and of course most importantly your parkrun this morning. Fantastic running and have a great weekend.

Good morning Damien, for my 70th parkrun I ran at my "home parkrun" of Dunfermline on a lovely sunny morning in a time of 32:43 which I am happy about but wasn't a PB, no frost, no rain and no big puddles to avoid, a very pleasant atmosphere and run, temperature was around 40F/+4C.

damienair profile image
damienairAdministrator in reply toAlMorr

Very well done Alan. If we were at parkrun together I would have just been a few seconds behind you. You would have been in sight.

AlMorr profile image
AlMorrAmbassadorGraduate10 in reply todamienair

Good run for you Damien, although Dunfermline is 25 miles away from where I live, since 2010 I have gone by bus on the first Friday of the month a walk in Pittencrieff Park well before parkruns started there in 2015, so when I learned that there was a parkrun in that park I decided to make it my 'home ' parkrun, in July 2019 two of the other parkruns I go to hadn't even started, I have got to know more people at Dunfermline than the 3 other parkruns I attend.

Another 0, this time a 7 Doris8, I will report back to you my weekly Sunday morning walk on the Active10 forum tomorrow morning, I intend to go a short 5K walk in the park near to where I live, I often run 3,5 and a 8K in that park, however, tomorrow I'am going to walk a slightly different route and see how it goes. 😊 That park is well lit at night with only a short path with no lights, so if I wished to, I could do a run at night.

This morning I had planned to do some parkrun tourism. I’ve completed all the parkrun courses within an hours drive of my home now which means I need to travel further. I almost slept it out, I got dressed and ran out the door, no breakfast. I drove for just over 1 hour to run at Cootehill parkrun in Co. Cavan. It was a gorgeous two lap woodland park along a river. As usual a very friendly volunteer team and a lovely crowd of about 50-60 runners and walkers.

I didn’t run much during the week but got out to run a 5K yesterday evening. My legs were a little bit tired this morning but I ran at a nice steady pace up and down hills and through forest trails. I had to take a couple of short walking breaks but still managed to finish in a time of 32:54 which I am happy with. I’ll run more this week. Happy running everyone.

There needs to be a challenge badge for getting all the Irish parkruns like there is for all the Scottish ones. Well done on your time Damien 👍👏👏

damienair profile image

I think there is one. Regionaire badge I think. I plan to pick a few off every year. But it will take years to do. I’ve done 43 different parkrun courses now.

Thanks Jonathan. I have 42 different courses done in Ireland, 44 in total. I’m on the most events list for Ireland but I have a long way to go with over 108 different parkrun events. I’m just going to pick off a few different ones each year. I hope to get to 50 by the end of 2023.

Hi Damien and everyone! I’m not going to steal Shake-and-run ’s thunder and do a long run report of her 50th PR at Stratford-upon-Avon, along with TailChaser , Katnap and Sandie1961 , but suffice to say Flossie and I were on the road at 6am!

I hadn’t intended on running the lot as Flossie has a spot of arthritis (medicated), and I thought she might struggle with 5k of on the lead running, but I found myself on Shake-and-run ’s heels and it was the perfect pace for us to trot around non stop behind her. I did overdress though, having banked on walk breaks! 🥵

We had coffee and goodies afterwards and of course a good post run chinwag, and now I’m at Gloucester Services on the way home. It’s basically the law to stop here when on the M5! My car refuses to drive straight past. 😅

My need for warmth & comfort won out (again) this morning and I missed the actual parkrun, so I did the next best thing and went on a 30 minute run later in the morning. Since I had just read the recent post about breathing, I decided to focus on my breathing. Though I was surprised by the Nike Run Club, which I tried for the first time today, that it pulled in music from my iTunes library. Okay. So, I listened to music and readjusted my speed when I got off the 4 in-breath, 4 out-breath rhythm (that appears to happen on the in-breaths, mostly).

According to the NRC I ran 4.07 km in 30:50 with an average tempo of 7'34". I don't know how accurate that is as I am just using my iPhone, no other gadgets... The overall distance of the iHealth app was off today

Some of the songs I'd like to share that I rediscovered through this process in case you're looking for some music to run to:

From Raya Brass Band in NYC: rayabrassband1.bandcamp.com...

From Black Violin: soundcloud.com/black-violin...

And here's the post on breathing: healthunlocked.com/bridgeto...

AlMorr profile image
AlMorrAmbassadorGraduate10 in reply toChannelRunner2

Nice run for you today ChannelRunner2, good music choice, the Raya Brass Band sounded a bit Caribbean to me and the Black Violin was a corrupted version of Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 3, have a great weekend 👍.

damienair profile image
damienairAdministrator in reply toChannelRunner2

Bery well done on getting out there and running today. Definitely getting out the door is the hardest part this time of year.

ChannelRunner2 profile image

Black violin consist of two amazing classically trained Black string instrument players (violin and viola) who bring hip hop to classical music to fight the discrimination they have faced as Black classical musicians. New musical interpretations, merging of musical genres, not "corruption"... Although I suspect Bach was also told he "corrupted" the musical style of his time... blackviolin.net/album/stere...

Cmoi profile image
CmoiGraduate10 in reply toChannelRunner2

Thanks for that link ChannelRunner2 , I'll be exploring more of Black Violin's work.

Also, you reminded me to go and listen to more from Kings Return, i.e. the four Black guys who sing a cappella in stairwells. 👍😊🎵

Today was supposed to be a 10k run, but following physio on tight hamstrings on Thursday I opted for the NRC guided 15 minute recovery run instead. I thought that I was running very slowly and carefully at about 7min/k. The weather was on the chilly side and included that lovely Yorkshire phenomenon “light drizzle” which has a habit reaching parts other rainfall can’t! I was surprised to find that I had run it at 6.46/k for 33.49. One of the issues with running with a coach in my ears is that I rarely look at my watch to check my pace “in run”. The most optimistic explanation for running too fast today is that the plan has made me fitter, so 6.46/k feels like 7/k used to. Or I just lashed it up …take your pick 🙂

Hello Damien and all!

First home parkrun in a few weeks and fab to be able to share it with so many of our HU friends for Shake-and-run ’s 50th! It’s been a lovely weekend already and it’s only Saturday lunchtime!

I’m very chuffed with my time as I’m finally getting some speed back again after losing it to marathon training. Officially 27:33 which is my fastest since May last year 😱 3rd in my age category at a home parkrun, so extremely happy with that. My lovely shoes did their thang! Also first outing for the Maaree bra that I got at the Running Show…😁 it passed with flying colours 👍👍👍

RED 28 at my local parkrun (Chadderton Hall Park).

A cold morning again (about 3°C), but dry. I got a static shock off the car when I was closing the door arriving at the venue.

I was just in time. There was a large crowd here today, bulked out by a visiting group from a club in the Halifax area (Sowerby Bridge Snails).

I chose a spot at the back of the crowd, said hello to a few regulars.

The Run Director today hadn't done this before in my recollection and her voice didn't carry.

And we were off. There was a lot of crowding from the higher numbers and I stayed with the rear group for longer than usual.

I chatted with a few of my fellow runners about various things as I was going round.

Surprise! I was lapped about three quarters of the way round my second lap. Either I was slow or that guy was fast. Both were true.

As I've been running every day this month I certainly didn't want to overdo things, especially as I'm planning a long run tomorrow. Subconsciously I probably held back a little today, and I have no problem with that.

I finished in position 39 out of 107, with a time of 30'22". I was faster at Pwllheli last week!

I hung around chatting for about fifteen minutes, by which time I was getting cold. I made my farewells and wandered back to the car, where I towelled off and wrapped up.

Hi everyone I had a weird Parkrun today my husband very generously bought me a present of a Garmin 55 watch completely out of the blue I feel a bit ungrateful still getting used to it I have had a Fitbit for years but only used it for steps preferring to use Strava for timing.

Just walking over to the park my Garmin starts buzzing saying I should have a rest day today well I wasn’t doing that.

I had been looking forward to today because it was our Parkrun pacer week I always like Pacer week.

Started to run with the 35 and 36 pacers in my sights,I had got halfway into the second lap when the Garmin starts buzzing continuously when I looked it had activated an emergency which when it happens texts my husbands phone ,He was indoors eating his breakfast I thought it had gone off because I had insisted on doing the run when it told me to rest,I had to stop and text him that I was OK.

I was just coming to the finish shouting out to my 2 daughters to phone dad and let him know I’m OK.

Well I finished in 36.14 not bad with all that had happened as we were walking home my son in law solved the problem the alarm had gone off after I bent down low to high 5 my granddaughter in her buggy.

It thought I had fallen over

So quite an eventful Parkrun today.

Happy running everyone

sometimes the tech is too clever Mumpark . The first time I wore my Garmin at parkrun it alerted me that I was running too hard for my heart. Needless to say, after lots of advice on here, that alert was disabled.

Maybe save your alert for when you are running alone.

Oldgirlruns profile image
OldgirlrunsGraduate10 in reply toMumpark

Oh dear, what a shame Mumpark! But you did your run and I’m sure things will improve as you get used to it - just remember not to bend down mid-run!

Mumpark profile image
MumparkGraduate10 in reply toOldgirlruns

Yes I will have to remember that thanks

damienair profile image
damienairAdministrator in reply toMumpark

The biggest problem with Smart Watches is that they are trying to make them too smart. I have a Garmin Forerunner 35, so 2 generations behind yours. I have mine completely dumbed down. Everything including alerts, alarms, text messages etc is turned off. Mine shows me the date and time during the day and when I’m running it shows average pace, distance and time. That is all I want from a smart watch. You can turn off a lot of the nonsense.

Well done on your parkrun. A watch is just watch. Turn off all the alerts and you’ll be fine.

Beachcomber66 profile image

nowster profile image

There are a couple of ways the Incident Detection could be triggered:

* The light button (top left) is held for about 5 seconds.

* You had something that jerked your wrist in the same way as a fall would. I've had it trigger correctly when I've tripped over a tree root. I've had a false trigger when I was pulling on a string during a walk and it gave way suddenly.

The "clap" between the two hands when doing the "high five" is probably what triggered it.

If you catch it in time, you can stop the countdown.

Mumpark profile image
MumparkGraduate10 in reply tonowster

it was definitely the bending down low that did it the high five was only very light Grandaughters not 2 yet so not a real high five.

Didn’t know that I could stop the countdown though I’m still not used to the watch I’m not very good with tech

Hello everyone, today provided the best weather this year. No ice, no rain, no gales! As a result we had 466 participants, and lots of PBs. But this made us all gasp - the first finisher was a tourist who ran 18 miles (from Chichester?) to get to parkrun and then ran 5k in 16:35. He is also a Run Director with lots of volunteer credits to his name.

Back to me! I came first in my newly acquired age group, which wasn’t difficult as everyone behind me was walking, including Coddfish and Oldgirlruns who took part together. My time of 33:32 is the fastest I’ve run in Southsea since last April with an age grade of 61.38%, which I’m really pleased with.

I’ve been busy organising a food collection at our parkrun next week as part of the Food Bank Run initiative so I’m now keeping my fingers crossed that enough people have heard the message, and we will have a lot of goodies to give our local foodbank.

Great to be back at Portsmouth Lakeside today after a two week break. Decided it was mild enough (3°) to get back into shorts and it was! The recent spell of dry weather had thankfully removed most of our puddles and it was a very enjoyable run with a welcome bit of overtaking, leading to a time of 29.51 with all kms (just) sub-6 mins - what more can you ask for!

Hi damienair and running friends!

I completed my 75th Parkrun at Bognor Regis yesterday. I started off slower than I would have liked, probably because I positioned myself too far back at the start and there was a field of just under 300, which is quite high for Bognor 😳

Nevertheless, I finished in my fastest time this year (0:34:02) which I’m happy with.🏃‍♂️

My plan is to complete my 100th Parkrun by my 60th birthday in August. I’ve calculated I can just about make it if I’m diligent and remain injury-free🤞

Happy Parkrunning everyone!🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️🏃

Great running David. I love sitting down with a calendar and working out milestones. Best wishes for reaching your 100th parkrun by your 60th Birthday. I’m at 121 now so almost halfway to my next milestone which I should reach in 3-4 years time.

More tourism for me yesterday. Highbury Fields in London. Really close to the tube station and 5 times around the lovely park on a little bit of a hill. Lovely people most of whom were also tourists. Mild and dry weather at last, yay! My home parkrun Southampton had around 1000 runners for the second week running whereas Highbury a mere 400. Not sure I’ll do parkrun next week as I’m doing the London Winter 10k on the Sunday but I’ll decide nearer the time! Have a great running week all 😃

I think, because I work full time from home staring at a computer all day, I relish going out and about whenever I can. You certainly live in a beautiful part of the world Beachcomber66 . I wouldn’t travel so much if I had that on my door step. Hope you will be travelling down to Hampshire for this year’s GSR though! X

Beachcomber66 profile image

I joined 567 other runners at Hove Promenade for my second park run. It was busy. I realise I usually run to have time by myself but that this is good acclimatisation for the Brighton Marathon weekend 10k I’m signed up for.

Finished in just under 30 minutes which I’m very pleased about - I chased the 30 minute pacer for the final kilometre 😆

Hi damienair, mine went really well thank you. Been chasing beating the magic 30mins which I succeeded with this week and also claiming a new PB into the bargain. Ran with my daughter who I cruelly ran away from on the hill however she got me back by finishing about 20 yards ahead of me. There was a field of 359 so it took time to get across the start so I'm claiming the Strava time as the PB 😂Strava 28.33

parkrun 29.11

Average pace 5.43 or 5.50

Age 4 out of 10

Age grade 58.54

Now to concentrate on getting up to 10k/60 mins
