Not quite a run?

Couldn’t quite call my mid-day attempt at getting out there a run, as reoccurring icy patches kept me from running.

First having to run on the roads, as pavements were still icy. Then finding my normal trail route was also made up of packed icy snow, packed and made slippery from quite a few dog walkers.

Too much even for my trail shoes.

So I turned around, tried the side roads in my neighbourhood and encountered similar compacted ice patches, both on the road and pavements. 😫

So I did the sensible thing, gave up after 20min and walked home planning in my mind a yoga session. Maybe a rowing one later in.

I should have prepared for this run.

Hubby said he had some spikes somewhere, but I have no idea if they are yaktrax or suitable from running.

And last week my gaters arrived, but did I put the on today? 😏 Well, they wouldn’t have made a difference, I guess.

But I am pretty jealous of those who got a run in today! Getting over the threshold of the house seems always the biggest step, so not being able to use that investment of effort for a proper run feels a bit disappointing.

But maybe a 15 min run is also a run, and a 10 min walk added to that is also at least some walk,

Now, can I have my trail back please!

yes this is still a run walk to put to your 1000 mile . Cold here this morning-4 again, gritters followed me on pavement this morning at 7.am. , no grips on shoes today, pavements and road black and clear. Weekend we see a shift of this cold weather.

That fifteen minute run counts! I did a fifteen minute run every week as part of my HM training. It’s really frustrating when you’ve planned longer but you absolutely did the right thing. Not worth an injury.

We’ve binned our run and are going for coffee instead. Maybe tomorrow. Hopefully your trail will have become passable by then.

I have run on slippery snow/ice this last week. It takes some patience, a fair bit of practice and a lot of luck. At times I had to slow right down and do tiny steps, but I did it.

As with driving on ice, it's a matter of not changing speed or direction whilst the low traction conditions continue. Adopting a "place and lift" gait with no push off at all with the trailing foot is the trick. And again, it needs a lot of luck and a certain amount of foolhardy stubbornness.

Avoiding that sort of situation is, however, always the best policy.

In this sort of weather last year I ended up on my bottom once. Thankfully it was a fairly soft landing.

🤣🤣 soft landing… I fear I’d have a less soft landing.

It is winter where I miss Germany the most. Most pavements are cleared of snow (by law, each homeowner is responsible for the pavement in front of their house). Streets are cleared. Most car-owners change cars to winter-tyres every winter. So although there is more snow, there is less dangers of slipping.

However, I wasn’t running then. Huh 🤔.

A runs a run - it all adds up to the weekly total, and the extra caution and care needed is probably quite energy consuming too.

Yes, I think you’re right! 👍🏽 Now do I count it as a walk with runs or a run with walking? 🤣🤣

Oh well done! I haven't run for over a week due to the ice. The pavements are treacherous and my husband slipped over while walking the dog in the fields a few days ago. Was giving myself a really hard time and was moaning about being quite sedentary too. So this morning I did yoga and also some weight training.I was considering running to the coffee shop where I'm meeting my dad this morning, but I'll walk as it's still so icy here. I've run in snow before, but this is worse! Hope it warms up soon!

I do love this weather, though. Just not for running. Better be safe.
