How often to run 10k? 🤔

I've been running for just over two years now. I run regularly and by the end of the year I will have completed two years of running 1000k each year. So I do a lot of running!

It's 5.5k runs mostly with the odd 6.5k I've but just finished the juju magic plan again and completed my 3rd 10k. I was wondering, as I've worked back up to a chunky distance, if I should try doing a 10k again a week later? Maybe even the week after that. Do you think I'd be OK or would that be a strain?

If it feels right for you and you are comfortable doing it... and you want to do it... why not?

Plenty of core strength and stamina work... shaking the runs up distance wise and maybe route wise too... all helping to keep that running body in trim...

Main thing is , you know your body and if you listen to it, it will tell you very clearly if things feel like a struggle.

Before my blip in 2020/21... my regular running was a short, a medium and a long run. Sunday Runday Funday was the long run... and that would see me out for at least 90 minutes plus... distance not a consideration... just a, see where I got to run. It suited me. Just heading back slowly towards 10K again now for the umpteenth time!

Go for it and let us know how you fare?

Congratulations on your 10k! I totally agree with Oldfloss . If you want to, give it a go! When I trained for a HM recently, that was two short runs and a long run every week-those long runs were over 10k for most of the plan. Try it and see. There’s no shame in starting and deciding to cut short of you’re not feeling it. Make sure you’re taking rest days and stretching.

If you're physically and mentally comfortable with it, staying injury-free and taking rest days, you could do a 10k run every week Cantsoimgonna if you want. It'd be a good idea to mix in some shorter distances, and vary your pace and routes too. The most important thing, though, is to have fun!

Echoing others - do what feels right for you. 🙂 My ‘perfect’ run combo is a 5K, a 6.5K and a long run of 10k each week. The long run increases if I am training for a race and equally, if I am feeling the ‘weight of life’(!) I will dial it back! My running has been a bit erratic over the last few months and I am hoping to get back to these as my regular sessions. Had a lovely 10k on the trails this morning and will be charging my head torch up for my weekday evening runs now the clocks have gone back! Happy running!🙂

Agree with everything that’s gone before. You won’t do yourself any harm physically if you do a 10k a week, but it depends what your head is telling you. If you want to, go for it. If it says can’t face it, cut it short.

Absolutely! If you're happy doing 10km now, doing it once every week is fine.

At the peak of my activity this year, some weeks had two 10km runs, two 5km runs and a half marathon. It all depends on what you feel you're capable of at the time. I've not had time to get back up to that sort of level recently.

I'm slowly getting back into things. This week so far has been 10km (Sunday), 3.2km, 3.2km, 8km, 3.2km. If I get time tomorrow I may do 10km.

I've gradually worked up to being able to do that over the last two years. There's no pressure for you to do anything like that. We all find our own comfortable level.

Thank you everyone. I decided to get out there. I decided that this was was going to be slow and fun. The last one was doing a PR which was pretty tough but this one was nearly 4 minutes slower and I enjoyed it. I realise now my question was pretty dumb as of course the hard-core Martahon and half marathon crew would have to do that and more distance! Silly me! But I guess I am no where near that so still being cautious. I definitely need to do more strength work if I make a habit of this.

Thanks again lovely lot. X
