Hello Everyone and happy weekend. Today is parkrun day, a free 5K event which takes place every Saturday morning all around the world. It is for everyone, slow, fast, able, disabled, big, small and everyone in between. Oh and don't forget about the super Mum's and Dad's who push their babies in buggies. You can walk, jog, run, run/walk, it's not a race, just a run in the park and loads of us here on Bridge to 10K do it religiously every Saturday morning.
Some of us may not be able to do a parkrun at the moment so until parkrun returns fully for everyone some of us will continue to take part on our own in a Virtual parkrun every Saturday morning called a (not)parkrun. Or if you are away on Holidays, prefer to run on your own, or do not have a parkrun close by you a (not)parkrun is perfect, please feel free to join in.
Please post a little run report after your parkrun or (not)parkrun and let everyone know how you got on. The little run report can be done over a post parkrun coffee and treat/cake. (parkrun is all about the after run coffee and cake, and meeting friends old and new).
If you are a new graduate and would like to start, all you have to do is run, walk or jog at a parkrun or a 5K run/jog/walk (not)parkrun anytime today or tomorrow and write a little run report under this post. It's like a little community and it is good fun, sets you up nicely for the weekend. If you want to you can register on the parkrun website and you can log your 5K (not)parkrun. In fact you can log any 5K done during the week as a (not)parkrun.
For anyone whom has not done a real parkrun yet and if it is available to you, give it a try. It is the most wonderful community event. Saturday mornings will never be the same again.
Looking forward to hearing from all of you who ran in real proper parkruns and (not)parkruns. Happy running and have a lovely weekend.

I’m just in the door after running at my local parkrun. Again I was joined this morning by my hairy daughter Ruby the Cocker Spaniel. I was OK for the first couple of Kilometres but I had to take a couple of walking breaks after that. Anyway I loved it. I ran and walked in the wind and the rain and I felt happy. Happy Halloween 🎃 weekend everyone. There was a Luigi and a couple of witches 🧙♀️ at parkrun this morning. I ran my 114th parkrun in a time of 34:42. As my teachers in School used to say, plenty of room for improvement! 😂
This sounds a fun park run with witches running alongside you both 🧙♀️ 😂 Well done!
I didn’t get out this morning - the rain was just too heavy and I didn’t fancy the drive back home soaking wet. I also feel like I’m going to have to invest in some waterproof trail shoes for winter park runs.
Hi Dendev75 , although I've never done a parkrun I've run lots of trails in all sorts of weathers. While I'd say trail shoes are really important for grip and protection, I've never bothered with waterproof ones. I'd rather run through mud and puddles knowing that anything that gets in also has a way out, rather than sloshing around my feet for miles!
I definitely need trail shoes for the grip, I’m scared of running down hills especially covered in leaves. I will look into the pros and cons of waterproof shoes as I really hate the feel of soaking wet feet through my normal trainers.
Sadly I got a visual aura (silent migraine) at 8.30am this morning and was unsafe to drive, so I missed out on parkrun this morning. It took about 45 minutes to pass. I'll do a 5km run this afternoon instead.
I had never heard of this until I suffered one this year, having never had a migraine. I hoofed it to my optician thinking I was suffering from a detached retina, and drew a picture of what I could see. Immediate diagnosis! Thankfully it doesn’t last long. What a shame you missed parkrun though.
I get the shimmering edge which spirals out towards my peripheral vision. It starts with my central vision ceasing to feel in focus, then gradually appears as flickering stripes across the affected area and ever-so-slowly spreads outwards and then fades.
Thankfully, it doesn't happen that often. Sometimes it seems to coincide with sinus problems.
Me too Dexy - I first had one about 10 years ago but they have dropped in frequency since I retired and I haven't had one recently. Mine usually took the form of a zigzag crossing the field of vision, lasting about half an hour.
sorry to hear that nowster Thankfully it happened before parkrun and not during so you could recuperate at home. Hope you managed to fit in a run later.
Jenny and I broke our pact to do Eastville this week. No guesses where we ended up - we like Severn Bridge - what’s wrong with that? 😅
Perfect conditions except for being a bit warm for my liking, and as it was pacer week I encouraged Jen to follow one. She ‘optimistically’ chose the 27 minute lady and came in at 26:42 (26:35 Garmin). Obviously she’s over the moon! She’s leaving her old mum for dust nowadays, despite PR being her only run each week!
My result was less auspicious at 37:43 (37:35 Garmin). No excuses, but I suspect my legs have muscle memory of all the slow recovery runs I’ve done recently. Time for more intervals I think! Other than being a bit sedentary, I really enjoyed the run too. No 99 done. ✅
Wow, huge congratulations to Jenny. That’s amazing. Trying to latch onto a pacer for a PB is tough but a great way to do it. How exciting for you too, parkrun no. 99. The big one next week 🥳
Nice one Shakes! PR twins! 😀 I’m fine with my time really as I felt great thoughout, even though my legs were stuck in one gear. Thing is I’ve done this PR over 4 minutes quicker in the past and I can’t let that thought go. 🙄
Sounds as though you both enjoyed your runs this morning cheeky! Good luck with your 100th next week - Dexy’s had a costume dress rehearsal and I hope we get to see some photographic evidence! I’m on my 49th - the big question is, will Dexy forgive me if I sneak in my 50th next weekend while she and UTS are celebrating with you😂!
🐈Ah! It was the cats that I mistook as dogs! Oh dear! So in you last reply I had cat then back square! So what was the black square, I wonder? If I had enlarged the the message I could have recognised the cat. Oh dear I am supposed to be talking about running and our daughter is staying so I should be cooking. Better get a move on.
I really don’t know over61! 😂 Sorry to deviate you off running talk; it’s easy to get sidetracked! 😂😂 Enjoy your time with your daughter and I hope the meal is delicious. (Jenny made dinner for us this evening - a definite win!) 😀
That speedy run seems to have have given Jenny extra energy. Or perhaps she often cooks for you. How lovely. 😊
I am coming to the conclusion that what I see as a black square is my computer telling me that it doesn't have the black cat emoji that you typed.
On the running hoping for 5.8km tomorrow. Knee, hamstring and Achilles all being helped by my physiotherapist and the exercises that she gives me. We are concentrating mostly on the knee.
A steady 5k in the rain today at 34:38. Lots of stretching beforehand to ease off tightness in my right calf. At the end of the run it felt really good. Progress 🙂
It was a (not) park run but I can still feel your virtual nudge in my ribs Dexy5 😂. Finish rehab first, then we will see. I didn’t know whether today was going to be a 4 or 5k. Fortunately it went well. I am sure that I am still 10 mile fit, so I hope to up the mileage during the week.
😂 me? competitive? …not now, or not much anyway. My running buddy has realised that he was, accidentally, pushing me to come back to our standard 8ks too quickly. So I am running solo for a while; at my distance and my pace. I will deploy the aftershokz on Monday and take in a bit of Coach Bennett’s wisdom while I have the chance. First test; will my calf have tightened up by tomorrow morning?
Yes, it being slippery is quite a worry. I was sorry to see from your profile that you had a nasty fall a few years ago due to icy conditions. Glad that you are able to run now though inspite of your injury. Were you actually running when you fell or walking? I've not yet run in the snow in the short amount of time since i started running and don't know whether it is advisable to do so if there is a risk of ice underneath. I suppose there is always the treadmill 🤗
Good afternoon Damien, I am trying to crack 33 minutes at Palacerigg Country Parkrun, not just yet, despite running the whole way my time this morning was 33:05, one second slower than my first parkrun there, it was a slightly different course* with two steep hills missed out but the terrain is still very rough, nevertheless I was in position 43 out of 75 runners, I can't really grumble, have a lovely Halloween weekend.
*The Electricity Board are laying a cable under part of the original course, that is why the route had to be changed.
Thanks Damien, there was a Halloween theme at parkrun this morning, about ten runners wearing orange pumpkin 🇯🇪 jerseys, the run director wearing all black clothing 👗 dressed as a witch, some of the trees along the course had ghostly white wrapping around the branches with skelotons on the branches as well, and to top it all up there were also a few ghost runners too.
I’m trying to get back to sub 33’ again as well Al. I think I would have to start in the front row at ours with 409 runners today. I am sure you will do it soon.
It's just at that parkrun Dexy, last week my time with a little walking at Dunfermline parkrun was 32.15, this morning at Palacerigg which is all trail but not too hilly with no walking, time 33:05, I do think that running on rough terrain slows me down a little.
Next Saturday I have arranged with my daughter and son in law to go to Drumpellier Parkrun and walk with the parkwalker, I will ask them if I can at least run the last 1 or 2 kilometers.
Good evening Oldgirlruns, I have run many sub 33 minute runs at all the four parkruns I go to except Palacerigg parkrun, for a non car owner there are now 4 parkruns that I can easily get to, when I started going to parkrun in 2019 there was only one, today was my 63rd parkrun. 😊 🏃🏾
Thankyou for asking AMorr. Running is a little erratic at the moment due to life's little ups and downs so sometimes it's 10 miles and sometimes only 5k but with these forums to keep me motivated I always get out at least once a week and some weeks up to 4 times so keeping it ticking over. I might even try a Parkrun one day for something a bit different to look forwards to!
Back at my home Parkrun today I had my nephews staying so I took them with me. (Think I should call them 1st and 2nd Shivers) They were quick but didn’t lap me. The ‘post run banana’ was a lovely coffee with TailChaser , Katnap and 2nd Kitten.
Well done everyone out there putting one foot in front of the other
Back to Stratford this week and back to pre-setup and running. Not done that combination in ages and it was nice to be able to put the signs out again.
Run was ok, it was very damp and I’m still a bit chesty from my cold, so that wasn’t the best combination. Also my achilles/ hamstring are complaining again due to doing walking lunges at the gym, so I’ll be slowing down again after today ☹️ Serves me right really.
So around 29:50ish today. Last sub 30 for a few weeks.
If you fancy a slow pacer at Severn Bridge next weekend I know just the person TC! 🙋♀️ Mind you, you might end up growing moss on your trainers or losing the will to live if you follow this snail! 😅
A combination of pouring rain, struggling again with a stinky cold and Lincoln 10k tomorrow meant I stayed in bed! Missed 4 consecutive parkruns now, but I’ll definitely be there next week 🐈⬛🐈⬛🐈⬛
Give me an excuse to wear fancy dress and I’ll be there! I’ve purposely cut myself out of this photo because what I wore this morning was a dress rehearsal for next week when a rather special parkrun is planned. These are the Running Sisters who invited me to join their club, obviously thinking I’m as mad as they are. Unfortunately they are based in Eastleigh!
I really enjoyed my run this morning and beat last week’s time by 2 seconds (fastest run since June) and was pleased to run it all for a change. That’s what running 8k with UTS during the week does! I think the new brooks shoes may have helped too. The old Saucony s have done 650km and have lost their bounce, so retirement to walking shoes is needed.
Nice run Dexy5. I am just breaking in my new Brooks Adrenalines(my third pair); they provide a bit of stability and 12mm heel drop. I wear them for everything! My physio has suggested I try cloudflyers for quicker road runs (still 9 mm drop). I will go to my running shop for a test flight when my calf settles down. You have to follow your physio’s advice after all.😇
I’ve just donated 2 pairs of old shoes to a charity called Jogon, who recycle and redistribute old running shoes with the aim of removing 1 million pairs this year from landfill. Could be something good for parkrun to get involved with?
Our local running shop does the same so I’ve got 2 older pairs to pass to them. I still can’t bring myself to pass on race shirts yet but the time will come.
We’ve got a donation box for them at our leisure centre Sandie. The box was chokka block when I saw it on Tuesday. We’re going to promote it at our parkrun but I don’t think it will need much by the looks of things.
It was touch and go whether parkrun would happen at Portsmouth Lakeside this morning, as there were still volunteer vacancies yesterday evening, but in the end the gaps were filled! Despite a few aches and pains, I felt that I'd run quite well (including a friendly 'tag team' rivalry during most of the distance with a fellow parkrunner), so it was a little disappointing to find that I'd actually run 4 seconds slower (31.50). Oh well - there's always next week! 😀
Well done Jonathan, I’ve found where you start makes such a difference too.
It’s such a shame that parkruns have to appeal for volunteers every week when they have so many runners isn’t it. We are collecting names for the 4 Christmas / New Year runs now and if we don’t get enough volunteers the BH runs won’t happen. Looking good so far!
Love the parkrun pumpkin damienair! I parkwalked with Coddfish today which was lovely; not our fastest walking time at 52 minutes but, hey, we hadn’t seen each other for a week so naturally there was plenty to catch up on! A quick coffee followed before she and Mr C went off to meet up with family and Dexy5, Up The Stanley and I were then forced to stop off for breakfast as we walked home. A pic of the sky this morning which was fabulous and a bit brighter that it appears to be here!
Awesome OGR! You had a great morning and no doubt a wonderful catch-up with Coddfish ! I do feel sorry for you having to stop for breakfast though. What a trial! 🤥😅
Lovely photo. Very well done on your parkwalk this morning. I love the walking initiative at parkrun. It’s a great way to get more people involved. Sounds like you had the perfect morning and exactly what parkrun is all about.
I hope it was ‘only’ the toasted banana bread and ginger cream? Family duly arrived and have now gone home. Steam mop has been deployed to de-dog the house. May now mosey across to cafe fresco myself for some of that nice banana bread.
Husband and I went to visit our middle son and his other half today, and did a spot of parkrun tourism as they live very close to the start of their local one.
It was very busy - I can say that as someone who regularly marshals a busy parkrun - but everyone was friendly and there were quite a few people in fancy dress, including the run director.
I jeffed (still having plantar problems) and husband ran on ahead. We each had a tiny hiccough at the end as the barcode scanning people were in one place, while the finish token bowls were somewhere else, but we got ourselves sorted out with help from a few of the locals.
All in all it was a grand day out (even if I currently can’t put my heel on the ground. Oops! 🤫)
Great for you to be able to see your son and get in a parkrun Maddee but I’m sorry you’re still struggling with the plantar- having suffered myself I really feel for you and hope it starts to feel easier soon!
ha ha If we had the finish tokens anywhere but next to the scanner, we’d lose even more than we do now. 5 went on walkabout yesterday! Sometimes they get returned in following weeks but often not.
We lose the odd one or two at junior parkrun, and the scanners are literally standing over the tubs reminding everyone to drop them in the tubs by their feet 🤣
Tourism for me again today. Got an early 🥱train to London and did Victoria Dock. Zero elevation and I got a pb at last because of it! The only elevation I experienced today was the fantastic cable car across the Thames 🚠. Lovely friendly parkrun and one to do again someday. Went to Borough Market afterwards and ate my own bodyweight in cheese and empanadas, but I earned it right? 🐖🤦🏼♀️🤣
Looks a perfect day for that tourist run Mudita11 . Eating cheese is great after running, especially on a pizza, but UpTheStanley says it affects his running if he has it beforehand.
I’ve done 21 different events, you must have exceeded that now.
Good evening everyone, I had another go at touristing today. I went to Sloughbottom park in Norwich in search of my first Nelson number 111. It's a lap round a park, a meadow and along a tree covered pathway. There was fairly heavy rain between 7am and 8am so there was lots of muddy puddles. It was a friendly crowd and group of volunteers. There were quite a few tourists there today. I got talking to a couple of chaps who were on their three hundred and eighty something tourist streak! I can't imagine going to a different PR every week! I enjoyed the run and I would definitely go back another time. I finished in 36:42 which I'm more than happy with for a new course and slippery patches underfoot.
Wow, 380 something different parkrun streak, not sure if that’s madness or commitment. 😂 I love tourism parkruns but a streak of 4 or 5 is all I could do.
Very well done to you on your parkrun and your parkrun tourism. Happy running.
Three weeks after Covid and I did 2 runs this week plus Parkrun today. I Jeffed it in under 47 minutes and I was pleased to have finished. Unseasonably warm. Here's to improving for next week.
My ability to walk 5k in a decent time, never mind run it, gradually declined as I got further and further through the 24 weeks of chemo, and it’s around 5 weeks since I last completed parkrun and 12 since I was able to run/walk it. Accumulating reduction in fitness and increasing sore toes through chemo induced peripheral neuropathy. Plus Saturday was always the start of the horrible achy and bowel impacted 2 days on my weekly schedule.
I have been in a nice holding pattern for the last few weeks, volunteering as timekeeper in order to get me up and out on a Saturday before the chemo malaise set in. Always my favourite volunteer role, it has the advantage that you can sit down to do it if necessary.
With the last shot of chemo in me on the 19th, I am starting to recover, although it’s going to take a while. I decided to ‘parkwalk’with Oldgirlruns , who was happy enough to do it at my slow pace. I took the trusty walking poles with me; I never expected them to get a second lease of life after their job in the early stages of recovery from hip surgery. We completed it, and I was utterly exhausted when I got back.
Hopefully it will get easier from here, although I am having a couple of scans next week that may lead to more treatment. One day, or week, at a time.
Great to hear that you have managed to continue going to parkrun throughout your chemo Coddfish .I’m sure the Southsea crew have been a great support. 🤞🏻🤞🏻 that your scans are good news xx
