I'm loving being in Brighton but running on the roads isn't doing my knees any favours. They aren't so much aching as sending me gentle reminders that tarmac is much harder than the grassy paths I'm used to so I took a few days off to give them a break. Oversleeping on Saturday meant I still haven't Parkrun here but maybe I'll manage the tourism this week.
Having not run since Wednesday, today we decided there would be no excuses. We set off along the beach where there is a fantastic boardwalk, a very forgiving surface, for the first km or so then back onto the road as far as the pier. It was cooler today with a brisk sea breeze which helped. All the other runners who were out overtook us but we were consciously choosing not to run flat out. Gotta give our old joints a bit of consideration!
I hardly checked my heart rate at all, just pottered along at a speed that felt comfortable and after 43 ish minutes the 5k was done, fast enough to feel I was being active, slow enough that I didn't get puffed out or redfaced. Checking my stats afterwards I only spent a minute in Zone 5, this is a record for me.
Mr Garmin obviously likes this approach as he's knocked a few more years off my age, according to him I'm only 41 now! I think he needs glasses 😂
