Taking it easy

Overslept slightly and the weather was less than inviting. Mr OBK and I spent a few minutes discussing whether we could be bothered going out and kind of decided no. He emailed his friend Andrey the running enthusiast that we were staying home because it was raining. Andrey responded 'We run in all weathers!' Oops. Got up, pulled on the running gear and a waterproof. No time for coffee, barely time for warm up stretches and a drink of water. Ate half a banana instead.

My NRC HM called for a 30 minute recovery run, which husband was quite happy with, but I know the Russian runners like to go farther and faster than that so we told Andrei that we'd do 15 minutes out and then return so he could carry on with the rest of the guys. About 8 of us set off, the other 5 soon disappearing into the forest.

Having driven to the starting point it took me a while to get into my running groove but by 15 minutes I was enjoying it so went a bit further before saying I'd like to turn back. I felt a bit mean, a bit of a wimp, but it was supposed to be a recovery run so not the time to overdo it.

We waved goodbye to Andrei who set off at speed to catch up with his buddies. The NRC app told me I'd done my 30 minutes but I carried on a little longer, about another 6 minutes. By then we were nearly back at the starting point and my legs just felt heavy so I decided I'd walk the rest of the way as I'd done over and above what I set out to do. Mr OBK carried on as he wanted to do 5k and once he finished we drove home for our breakfast.

Andrei did 11.5 km at a pace of 5;54min/km. I managed 4.65 km at 8:56 min/km. That's why I feel I hold him back when he runs at my pace, such a nice guy.

Another thing, I don't know if it was because I skipped the coffee but my HR was slightly lower than usual, didn't go into zone 5 at all!

Oh, and the rain held off :)

Yeah, guilt, shame, appeal to competitive nature - works every time 😂

Oooh, that’s busy Obk. 5:54 for 11•5 km for Andrei is pretty amazing. Your 8:56 is more my league.

I’ve been taking your advice and resting my knee today. I’ve also learned that an ice pack applied too long can burn the skin. It’s good to be young and foolish 🤣

Be very careful with the icepack. My sister had excruciating pain after some facial surgery and made the mistake of using the icepack for too long. Her skin ended up permanently damaged from an ice burn.

I got an ice burn on the back of my calf once, the skin froze solid. Thankfully no lasting damage, but it’s so easy to do.

Well done on your run, and please send Andrey round to my place, I need someone to coax me out today! You seem to be having a great time 😊.

Great you got out there in bad weather, you would have felt bad staying home on the sofa and your friend had gone running, hope the nrc half plan is working for you? I start that next run I do

Really enjoying the plan but I'm going slowly as I don't have any specific event that I'm training for. Good luck!
