I’ve been off the grid for a while with a daft knee injury and a stinking cold that left me zonked for ages. I’ve got a 10K coming up so I thought I really ought to do some short runs to remind my legs what to do. We also had a holiday booked where conditions would be significantly hotter than home. Not particularly expecting to actually run, I packed some kit “just in case”. This morning everything aligned and I made it out.

The daily temperature here is around 28oC so if I was going, it would have to be early. After a great night’s sleep, I woke up naturally at 7.15am feeling super energetic. This was the opportunity if I was going, so I just did it! Having a vague idea of where to go and covered in sun cream, I set off along the coast road. It was a very good decision to extend my warm up walk slightly to take me to the top of a hill so I started with a lovely, breezy ten minutes of gentle downhill with a bit of shade. The terrain flattened out and I left the town along a rugged path by the side of the water. Stunning scenery.

I was feeling more like a proper runner than ever before since the only people out were other runners, I was running in another country and it was actually feeling good! I’d decided that I’d try to take it easy and the future I got, the hotter it was getting with less shade and less breeze. That was the time to turn back and then stop and walk. I walked the remaining 3km back and jumped straight in the pool.

I’m currently enjoying a mega runner’s high watching some little birds drink from the swimming pool while I fill up on espresso and feta pastries for breakfast. It wasn’t a big distance or particularly fast but this really felt like a great run. It’s going to be a good day today!

It really is. It’s been a tough few months since January really so the break is much appreciated. It such a privilege to be able to run in such a gorgeous location. I think next time I’ll keep going to the next little town where there’s a bus stop to get back. It’s a bit far to go there and back in the heat. I might be able to persuade my husband to meet me there with my swimming costume for a dip in the sea to cool off. That really would be living the dream!

It was definitely one I’ll remember. Such stunning scenery. I wish I’d taken more photos but I also enjoyed just enjoying the money and not taking photos. Always a dilemma!
