A few days in Northumberland

Ee, they breed them tough up here. Monday freezing cold, Tuesday a strong, biting wind. But nothing stops these intrepid hikers and dog walkers.

This morning was just right for a morning bimble from Beadnell to Seahouses and back. Lovely views and a great cinder/tarmac footpath all the way.

Oh how fabulous! Cold yes but what a place!😀

I stayed there for a week and had to walk a run route I’d planned as I was injured. When I got on the beach at Seahouses a windstorm kicked up, blowing sand everywhere. I buried my head into my hood to protect my eyes. My holidays are always the same 😁

My OH and I had a picnic huckered down in the dunes at Bamburgh. We figured if we laid low the wind would pass over us 🥶😀

Tuesday’s wind was a doozy here, and the countryside hereabouts is littered with fallen trees after storms Dudley and Eunice.

And, yes, it is so beautiful here with BIG skies and quite flattish runs.

That looks fabulous HF, enjoy your hols!

We stayed on Holy Island last week- the first time we have been able to stay since the pandemic. I love tourism running and liked being 'out there' in my minimal layers whilst everyone was bundled up against the weather. I ran around the island with my dog on a couple of occasions when the causeway was closed and it was deserted. I saw deer and seals and as the sun set, heard the seal singing in the harbour. The walk from Craster to Low Newton and back (about 7 miles) is fabulous and I would highly recommend. There is a pub at either end if that helps!

Enjoy your stay, it truly is a magical place!

What a coincidence hw! We’re off to Holy Island this morning for a two day stay at the Crown pub. I have worked out that early Saturday morning I can run the causeway and back before getting washed away. This is all “Knee Willing”.

Last time three years ago we couldn’t visit the ruins as we had a dog. So looking forward to that especially.

Marvellous! The Crown and Anchor is probably one of my all time favourite pubs. I have had some great times in there over the years. Food is great and the atmosphere friendly.

The only issue with running the causeway is that it is often busy with vehicles and some go quite fast. You can run by the side of the road but it is claggy/wet.

I would recommend going to the causeway and then take the kissing gate on the right hand of the road- it is well signed. Follow the path over the land, through the dunes and on to a magnificent and often empty beach that is suitable for running and absolutely beautiful.

My favourite run (or walk indeed) is to run down past the harbour, beyond the castle and down to the foreshore. Look to your left and you will see a white obelisk in the distance. Head that way and then keeping the sea on your right hand side follow the coast line. There are a series of beautiful beaches, huge skies and wildlife and seabirds.

There are various paths to follow. The pub will have an OS map, so you can find your way.

I am feeling jealous but hope you have a brilliant time!

Thank you for all that information. Very helpful. In fact, although we’re eating at the Crown & Anchor this evening, we’re staying at the Lindisfarne Hotel which is very good.

Is Seahouses where all those eclectic mix of 'houses' are? We loved it up there, overnighted in campervan right at the end of the road falling off the cliff!

There is certainly a mix of old cottages, standard suburbia and a “kiss me quick” parade. The Ship is a lovely old pub full of quirky paraphernalia and quirky locals plus determined walkers.
