I couldn't help myself but to go out and get another red tick on my NRC plan. ๐ Thanks GailXrunning ๐๐
This time a 5k with Coach Bennett. I was really pleased I had CB with me today as I had forgotten lots of important things. Start off nice and steady, make adjustments which doesn't always mean going faster - make smart adjustments. Excellent words.
My 5k route has a 1.5k uphill section through the parks near the start. As I approached the turn to go onto the park paths I noticed a distant runner heading towards me from the opposite direction.
A few minutes later I was conscious that a shadow from behind (very sunny out today with the frost) was getting larger and larger so knew I was about to be humiliated by being overtaken.
Sure enough, he coasted alongside and enquired if I was going all the way to the top. I confirmed and he invited me to run up with him. I politely declined as he was clearly fitter and going at a faster pace.
I thought it was jolly nice of him to offer to pace me up though.
At the top I made my way through the fairy woods with the little tree nests and personal messages before getting to the pools. I now questioned my decision as I needed wellies more than running shoes to get round the pools but hey! This was turning into a good run.
I've started doing the HM plan but at the moment my goal is to try to get up to 10 miles this year. If someone had told me I would be trying to run 10 miles back in March I would have said they were insane! ๐ฎ
I am going to try the HM plan next, I find running to a plan much more interesting than what I plan for myself ๐ itโs amazing what we can do when we set our mind to it!!
What a great sounding run - how nice that another runner reached out to you like that. Now all you need to do is learn to love the mud ๐ !
I'm interested in how you are finding the NRC HM plan...I'm toying with both NRC and the Garmin plan at the mo. Leaning towards NRC as it seems more flexible, and I do have a soft spot for CB. Like you, I'm in no hurry...
To be fair, I started the Garmin programme and initially enjoyed it although I felt "pressured" by it.
When I had enough of the garmin plan I was working through and started the NRC plan the difference was immediately apparent (to me anyway).
Garmin is more focused around time, speed, numbers etc whereas the NRC training is more tailored to your perceived efforts.
For me, this made NRC more relaxing, engaging and enjoyable and you also get encouragement from the guided runs if you like to use them. Plus, Garmin likes to encourage me with "unproductive" comments ๐คฃ๐คฃ
Personally I love my Garmin watch to collect my data and use as a GPS but really prefer the NRC training programmes ๐
Sounds like we are on the same wavelength. I 'paused' the Garmin plan when I fancied an extra day off and didn't appreciate the warnings that I would not be ready for my race day. I have no intention of running a race, that sounds like way too much pressure! So NRC is looking a strong possibility, at least as a guide, and for an occasional Coach Bennett pick me up.
Currently enjoying a spell of 'take-it-easy-January' after overdoing it in December. Now what was that I said about staying off the IC? ๐
See you further down the road!
