So, my plans for fun running on holiday were curtailed when I caught a really heavy cold from my toddler niece the day before we went! With my husband still recovering from Covid we had a much less active holiday than usual but really enjoyed a 15km walk along Saltburn beach and cliffs and a short but very steep climb up Roseberry Topping! No running though, sadly.

I wasn’t quite back up to speed when we got back so decided to go a bit easier this week. I also wanted to make sure that, now I’m not following a strict programme, I was running for the fun of it - I’ve always enjoyed running but didn’t want to risk it becoming a chore. So this week I did a 3km speed interval run on Monday courtesy of NRC and a 4km run on Weds where I tried fartleks for the first time - I really enjoyed it and luckily chose a route with lots of lampposts to be my markers!

For my long run on Saturday I decided 7km would be a good distance without pushing myself too much. I found it a fairly tough run to start with but was pleased to finish in 48:59, which is 3 minutes faster than when I last ran that distance in late July, and I also did my second fastest 5km. I was a bit worried than my running mojo was gone after a short break as I found all this week’s runs harder than usual but pleased to see that my strength is building in the background.

Planning a few more weeks of fun running and consolidating the 10km distance and then hopefully moving on to a half marathon plan.

Well done for getting back to it! Sounds like you’ve slotted right back in. 👏👏👏👍

Sometimes you just have to ease off for a few weeks/months and build back up again. Life has a habit of throwing stuff in your way.

Well done for getting back into things. 👍

Oh glorious, really envious of your Saltburn walk (had a fabulous short holiday in Skinningrove once and very fond memories of early morning runs) Envious of you being at the top of Rosebery Topping...not so sure I'm envious rather than just awed about the business of getting there.

Have you seen

which is by Daniel Bye and Boff Whalley (both runners as it happens)

Oh thank you, I hadn’t seen that! We did Pendle Hill about a month ago and I’d say that was probably steeper for longer than Roseberry Topping, although it looked more feasible from ground level so it wasn’t quite as intimidating! Both well worth the climb though. Saltburn was absolutely beautiful, a new favourite place for sure!
