On Sunday I did my second 10K and instead of waiting again weeks and months, I did today (6 days later) my third 10K (with a 5K in between). Thought to enjoy the last dregs of my 3 week holiday πΈ.
Did not really plan for it, though I did take along some water and 2 jellies (1 for 5K and 1 for 10K). So I guess I already had a slight inkling my stubborn character would force me to go for 10K.
Cloudy and chilly, perfect running weather. Wore shorts and a short sleeved shirt, while people walking or biking wore jackets and fleeces. Nevertheless I saw several other runners dressed like me, so I was not the only weirdo.
Lots of people around, multiple runners, walkers, bikers, cyclists and cars. Had to stop a few times again to let a car pass by. But I do like this route so much despite the inconveniences.
At 6K my upper legs started to feel tired and I was starting to doubt the idea of going for 10K. But I am nothing if not stubborn, so I kept going and succeeded in getting to 10K with a middle time of all three of my 10K's.
Except for 1, I also got negative splits: 9:17 - 8:44 - 9:02 - 8:26 - 8:20 - 8:20 - 8:09 - 7:55 - 7:45 - 7:17. I also got PB's on fastest 1K (7:17), 1 mile (11:55) and 5K (39:13). My first 5K sub 40!
Brilliant effort for your 3rd 10k, weather far better for running now. I was cycling in shorts and T-shirt yesterday, great for uphill effort, but must admit jacket went back on for the downhill sections. Happy running π€
Very Well done BS. Seems to me that you've now got 10k firmly in your legs - no mean feat! I suppose the more you do it the less scary it becomes, but you should certainly enjoy it if you can for as long as you wish. Further distance may or may not beckon, but this is a real achievement to be savoured in my book!Liking the route is a great help I find as it makes going out the door to a place you enjoy more inviting - all positive when looking for encouragement.
Thanks and indeed, 10K is not as haunting as it used to be. My next goal is 10 miles. But that will take a LONG time yet as I don't plan on increasing the distance fast.
Fantastic! That was a great 10k run. I think you are wise to keep up that distance regularly - it takes a while to get back to it if you drop distance, doesn't it? Well done on those PBs too!!
True, between my first and second 10K were several weeks and I had to build up slightly again. Going to try to participate in the world record 10K 19th of September. So hope I'll do another 10K in 2 weeks π
I've only done one 10k and had a lay off for injury. Started back up the distance again then put my back out and had another break. Now back at it again and hope to reach it some time in Sept. Hopefully this time I'll be able to keep it going. Good luck on the 19th - that might be a bit soon for me.
Maybe it is against your idea, but have you tried Jeffing? Running with walking breaks. Lots of people use a ratio like 30 secs running + 30 secs walking. But I do 4min30 running + 0min30 walking. It can prevent injury, certainly combined with slowing down a bit. Without Jeffing, I would not be able to reach 10K.
I did try it for a bit using the Garmin coach on my watch. It is amazing how it can actually make you faster, isn't it? But I have some perverse desire to run non stop to 10k. I've learned to slow myself right down though. I'm also trying to get in the habit of cross training - that's always been my problem, I think.
I ran 5K two times non stop a week or 2 ago. Proved to myself that I can do it. But it does not feel nice. I feel so much better when Jeffing. And running is pure fun for me, so I keep Jeffing. Am even faster with my long ratio than some who don't Jeff π
