On the fantastic 10k plan and ran my second 8k this morning and decided to go to the hillier park to test myself.
It’s a lovely open space which I have walked many times known locally as the ‘Fanny on the Hill park’ 😳 I know !!! Legend had it Dick Turpin would stop in a cave in our local woods and Fanny would flash her …. Light to let him know if it was safe to come to the tavern. We have been trying to find the cave on our walks but not found it yet, it’s apparently been filled in by the council but would still like to find it!
Well the run was not easy it has many dips and steep climbs so I admit to slowing to a snails pace! A cyclist stopped to chat to me too as he had seen me in my first lap I told him all about the c25k and he was going to look it up when he got home, I must say I enjoyed this chat as I composed myself to complete the second lap.
So although I completed the 8k it wasn’t the best so do I run it again or move on but perhaps stay away from Fanny in the hill and just perhaps do one lap on a shorter run day? Possibly good strength training 🧐

Hills will make you stronger, and fairly fast. Run slow with small steps or of you need to walk, make it a power hike, briskly making your way uphill 👍🏻
That parks name is hilarious! 😂 I bet its got a really boring name on the map! I'd be fascinated to find the cave too.Very well done on the 8k and doing it on a hilly route different to your usual
👍. It definitely keeps it interesting. I was also thinking to do a different route this time. I'm a few days behind schedule this week after hiking a couple of days of the Cowal Way and carrying camping gear at the weekend. My legs were just goosed after it. I did the 4k on wednesday and the 5k this morning so thinking Sunday for the longer one. My 5k route this morning was hilly and its a very different run to the flat straight route I've been using for the longer ones. I'll keep the hills for the shorter runs (my goodness, talking as if 5k is short ha ha!). Good luck with Week6!
We are becoming proper runners just saying 5k run is just a stroll these days🤣Yes the council refer to it as East Wickham open space very boring! There used to be a pub called Fanny on the hill which is why we all refer to it as such but it was knocked down and replaced by flats who have a rather wonderful view over the open space and up to Shooters hill.
The legend of Dick Turpin is on the boards next time I will take a picture, we have never walked in the woods as much as we have during the past months it’s rather beautiful considering it’s London!
I think I will run there again but perhaps on the shorter 5 k run so that would be one lap of ‘fanny’ 🤣🤣 definitely hilly!!
Love the sound of a hike and camping, Scotland is so beautiful good luck with the run on Sunday but don’t push yourself too hard we have achieved so much!!
Fab! A bit of history, some hills and woods and the best locally named park in the country - sorted 🙂. I think tomorrow's run here is going to be dodging heavy rain and lightning. It's going to be interesting!
Hills! Most I run slowly up with small steps but it all depends on the gradient - my longer route from home has the sort of hill with black arrows on the map to indicate a steep gradient - I walk up that one as fast as I can manage. I was pleased that my son who runs almost twice as fast as me on very long hilly routes says he often speed walks that one too😂. So surely both will build stamina as others have said.
