Having graduated last August I now run 2 or 3 times a week and am pleased that I am able to manage 40 minutes comfortably. Feel pretty fit. However, I am having a hysterectomy on Wednesday and I am really worried about how long it will take me to get back to running (or even walking!) after the op. Is there anyone who has experienced this or does anyone know of a programme I could follow to regain my strength? Be really grateful for any help and advice. Thanks.

Help and advice please
Wishing you all the best for a speedy recovery. At the moment you need to concentrate on that, getting over a major operation. You will hopefully get lots of advice on when it’s safe to think about running again. Even if you have to start slowly you know you’ve reached this point once so will get back to here with patience. Happy future running 🤗
It depends a lot on what type of procedure you are having. I had keyhole surgery and was in good shape before the operation - I was back to normal exercising in about 6 weeks (I'm not sure exactly cos it was a long time ago! But it really wasn't very long considering). I did a lot of swimming, walking, and strength work back then but had not yet discovered running. I would think it would have taken a little longer to return to running (because of the effects of running on the abdominal area) and I would have needed to ease back in gently. I believe it actually takes about a year for a hysterectomy to heal completely, so it's amazing really how quickly people usually get back to normal activities!
If your operation is done vaginally you may well have a faster recovery, but there are many variables. I suggest you get as much advice as possible from your care providers and plan to take things slowly, and as they come! You will most probably be advised to start walking very soon after the op, and it will be hard for a while, but you will be running again before too long xxx
Appreciate your advice. I suppose in my head it's taken me a while to get fit and I don't want to.lose that, but I'll have to go with what my body tells me. Got my.more philosophical head on this morning! Thanks.
I'm glad you're feeling better about things today! You will lose some fitness, but you can build it back up again - and you will gain from not having the problems that have lead to your operation anymore. Best wishes for Wednesday, I recommend extra pillows!! xxx
