Testing a theory

Good morning runners! After realising the other day that I could now run a sub 30min 5k at super "easy" pace, I wanted to test the theory that I could run a sub 60min 10k at the same relaxed "easy" pace...

Up before the birds, kit on and out of the house for 5 something, 1km warm up walk, stretches and off into a slow 10k. I took coach bennett today with one of his hour runs, I've heard it before a couple of times, it's the one with English Gardner and the Headspace guy on there, both interesting people. In the background I had classic dance playing to keep me moving. My legs were pretty tired and appreciated the steadier pace, also breathing was a lot more relaxed especially first half. The gremlins wanted to give up pretty early on, around the 3km mark they started chirping up and again at 5k. Gremlin you now I don't give up so why do you still persist? 🀣 They didn't win. By the 8k mark I felt pretty tired and wished I'd brought some water, luckily the temperature was pretty low so was able to drive on to the finish.

Amazingly I ran at a steady easy pace and finished 10k in 59.59 😁😁😁

Theory proven, I can "slow" run 10k in under an hour 🀣

Getting near an hour took me maximum effort only 5/6 months ago, the human body is an amazing thing and you can achieve whatever goals you set for yourself πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»

Is a 45 minute 10km achievable (current best 56.22) πŸ€”πŸ€” I think that's the target I'm going to work towards over the next year, it may never happen but I love a good goal 😁

Have a great day runners!

Great effort, you’re young and getting fitter all the time and now believing in your own abilities too - brilliant. Keep going, who knows what time you can achieve for a 10k. Just remember while increasing pace to throw in a mix of different distances and paces to avoid injury. Happy running πŸ€—

Thank you GH 😁 I plan on mixing up the distances regularly and maybe doing some fartlek just to keep the body guessing a bit πŸ‘πŸ»

Some people do do 45 minute 10km runs. You'd have to be averaging 4'30"/km to do that, though. That's my "run like stink for a km and then lean against a wall for a minute to recover" pace.

My fit neighbour does half marathon distance at 4:11/km πŸ˜‚

I'm breaking out into a sweat just thinking about that! πŸ˜…

I won’t even start to tell you his cycle speeds, suffice to say the village cycle group were up in arms when 20mph speed restrictions appeared on their routesπŸ˜‚

It's not a legal requirement to have a speedometer on a pedal cycle, so they're not subject to speed limits. There is an offence of "wanton and furious cycling" that might be applied if a cyclist is going too fast for the conditions.

I think some locals don’t appreciate time trials running past their front doors πŸ˜‚

Yeah that does seem crazy pace, and keeping that going for 10k? Wow! In have to take about a minute a km of my current speed which does seem unlikely but who knows, anything is possible πŸ€£πŸ‘πŸ»

Thanks Jools, enjoyed just being out there today, don't always have to go for land speed records 🀣🀣

Thank you 😁 I think it will take a long time and a lot of effort but maybe one day! πŸ‘πŸ»

"Easy pace" ? πŸ€”Nice one πŸ˜πŸ‘

Thank you 😁 It's all relative lol, I think it's because I spend so much time pushing running a bit faster each run, my easy pace seems to have just got quicker. Perfect if I start running longer distances again 😁

Haha, yes as you say , all relative 😁

Ah those were the days. I remember when I could just trot around a parkrun course at a lovely relaxed easy sub 30 minute 5K time and likewise similar easy pace for 10K. Now I'd be found half way round, bent over and facing head first into a flower bed. Well done.

Thank you 😁 I am yet to require a flower bed 🀣 very happy my pace seems to have naturally increased to what it is now and hope there's room for improvement as a I get fitter/lighter. I love a gadget and a stat so these little challenges keep me inspired lol hopefully il be able to attend my first ever park run soon 🀞🏻

parkrun will push you to improve. Every week you will want to improve. Those PB messages a few hours after parkrun are addictive. I started at 39 minutes for a parkrun and managed over time to get down to 25:36 which feels a long long way off now. You will absolutely love parkrun. It is an amazing community. The most enjoyable parkruns are the nice easy relaxed runs just soaking up the atmosphere.

Great run!

And yes, I constantly marvel at what we can all do, it’s pretty amazing that I couldn’t run for a minute last year, now I can run up a hill and catch my breath while still running!

Seeing what you’re capable of is great fun, just don’t get carried away too much with times or you’ll end up on the injury couch as many times as I have πŸ˜‚ unfortunately I’m good at giving the advice but not taking it myself!

I’ve no doubt you’ll hit your target one day πŸ‘πŸ»
