Parkrun’s Return Delayed

Just heard that parkrun’s return in England has been delayed from 5th to 26th June. Only 250 out of 600 have had permission to return so far so there is concern that the permitted ones would be overwhelmed if they returned on the original date. Fingers crossed that the red tape is cut and the others can commit to the new date.

Press release is here: parkrun.me/s5bva

I read that, but at least the number of those landowners giving permissions are rising... slowly!Fingers crossed for everyone;) x

They are. I’ve been watching them come in on Twitter and it’s definitely got busier. I think it will be ok once the London bottleneck is released.

.......... and I believe the Isabel Trail has permission today

Yes! We’ve had a chat about that eh Oldfloss 👍😀

I have good vibes about the 26th. At least it’s not postponed indefinitely like the earlier reports suggested it might. 🥰

I hope you are right.

Very true cheeky. I think they’re feeling more optimistic.

There’s been so much media coverage about the benefits of PR this week that I’m sure the stick-in-the-muds will budge. 🤞

In that case, parkruns in Scotland, Wales and N. Ireland could resume the same day, not sure about The Republic of Ireland, perhaps Damien might know about that.

TailChaser profile image
TailChaserGraduate10 in reply to AlMorr

That would be the ideal Al, so maybe it’s not such a bad thing.

Fingers crossed this will give them the breathing space they need to convince a few more landowners. I'm currently trying to process the fact that community choir rehearsals seem to be the most dangerous activity in the UK, since the govt has effectively banned them. So that's two enjoyable, beneficial and non-profit making activities that can't get off the ground. Funny that.

Sandie1961 profile image
Sandie1961Graduate10 in reply to grumpyoldgirl

Our choir is targeting mid September return (although we break for July and August anyway usually) 🤞🤞 Gutted parkrun is delayed again though 🥲

TailChaser profile image
TailChaserGraduate10 in reply to Sandie1961

We just have to hold on for the 26th Sandie. Think of Cheltenham and then it’s not much longer after. 🤞🤞🤞

Cheltenham! Ooooo. 👏👏👏👏👏

We've been doing choir and drama rehearsals over Zoom for the last few months.

Hopefully we'll be back in time for a Christmas concert, which usually is done in aid of a local charity.

The problem with doing anything over video conferencing is latency.

cheekychipmunks profile image
cheekychipmunksGraduate10 in reply to nowster

I’m sooooo done with choir rehearsals over Zoom nowster. 🥱🥱🥱 The latency issue is awful isn’t it?

nowster profile image
nowsterGraduate10 in reply to cheekychipmunks

What we do is all mute and just listen and sing along to the rehearsal pianist's tinklings.

TailChaser profile image
TailChaserGraduate10 in reply to nowster

The latency makes the Windband rehearsals near on impossible. They just try to play along like you do nowster, on mute.

nowster profile image
nowsterGraduate10 in reply to TailChaser

The other thing I find is that singing whilst sat in front of a laptop screen isn't as easy as doing it standing up. I'm really out of practice, my vocal range has shrunk and a long run of high Es (tenor part, so E above middle C) quickly tires out the voice.

SkiMonday profile image
SkiMondayGraduate10 in reply to nowster

Have you considered repositioning the laptop so that you can use it standing up? Or maybe just leave it where it is and tilt the screen back?

cheekychipmunks profile image
cheekychipmunksGraduate10 in reply to nowster

Us too and it’s not fun.

grumpyoldgirl profile image
grumpyoldgirl in reply to nowster

Yes this is what we do, so effectively singing by yourself, which isn't for everyone, when you're reaching for that top note😵‍💫

grumpyoldgirl profile image
grumpyoldgirl in reply to nowster

Yes we have too, but it's not the same, just me and the choir master! And so many members just can't be doing with it.

grumpyoldgirl profile image
grumpyoldgirl in reply to Sandie1961

One of my choirs had hoped to start back within the month, in a limited way. No idea what will happen now. Although, outdoor rehearsals could happen, weather permitting! I'm still hopeful for parkrun 🤞

TailChaser profile image
TailChaserGraduate10 in reply to grumpyoldgirl

Rubbish isn’t it GOG? Our kittens haven’t been able to play their brass instruments in bands since last March. One orchestra has gone completely and virtual rehearsals with others have only just started up. Doesn’t give them any incentive to practice which is hard enough to get them to do at the best of times. I hope yours choirs get sorted out soon - surely once you’re all vaccinated?

grumpyoldgirl profile image
grumpyoldgirl in reply to TailChaser

Latest clarification to guidelines is no more than 6 people in a non professional rehearsal. Lots of petitions have been started up though!

cheekychipmunks profile image
cheekychipmunksGraduate10 in reply to grumpyoldgirl

I’m in 2 choirs GOG. One’s on hold until next March as the MD has moved abroad to work during the pandemic, and the other one has just started rehearsing outside. We’re hoping to find somewhere big enough indoors to accommodate us, but it’s so hard with social distancing and no one fancies singing in a mask. 😷

So for a while, my 2 favourite pastimes were sidelined. ☹️

grumpyoldgirl profile image
grumpyoldgirl in reply to cheekychipmunks

Me too cheeky. I just feel like everybody is going to pubs and football matches, and I just want to go to parkrun and sing with my choir buddies- it's really not the same in my living room!

Sandie1961 profile image
Sandie1961Graduate10 in reply to grumpyoldgirl

I know just what you mean, but we haven’t even been having Zoom rehearsals - a straw poll indicated that it wouldn’t feel right. Mind you, at the time we had no idea it would last for over a year ☹️

grumpyoldgirl profile image
grumpyoldgirl in reply to Sandie1961

Our zoom sessions were really popular to begin with, but numbers have been dropping off. It's definitely losing its novelty value! Plus some of our senior members really can't get the hang of it.

RunaroundSue profile image
RunaroundSueGraduate10 in reply to grumpyoldgirl

And our Ukulele club, folk clubs.

grumpyoldgirl profile image
grumpyoldgirl in reply to RunaroundSue

Oh no Sue, even ukuleles? 😟

RunaroundSue profile image
RunaroundSueGraduate10 in reply to grumpyoldgirl

It's the singing! Our Zoom meetings have worked well but we are getting bored now. One person leads a song while the others join in on mute. Because there are two of us Geoff and I get the songs with refrains! He is really our bass player but that doesn’t work on Zoom so he has to play uke.

We have two gigs booked in July and August, as long as we get time to rehearse beforehand. The August one is an outdoor market so quite hopeful about that.

The folk club is also on Zoom and works well, but it is in Aberdeen and we are near Manchester so we won't be seeing them in person until we can go and visit our friends

grumpyoldgirl profile image
grumpyoldgirl in reply to RunaroundSue

Fingers crossed for the gigs 🤞

Dexy5 profile image

Very sad, but I think parkrun will be more acceptable to the public by 26 June. Our surrounding parkruns have said yes, but they would have been totally overwhelmed by our Southsea runners as PCC has not yet approved. I’ve noticed that National Trust and Forestry Commission have not yet approved theirs either. 🤞 for June 26!

TailChaser profile image
TailChaserGraduate10 in reply to Dexy5

If the 21st June loosening happens they will have no excuse but tbh I can’t see that one happening. Lets just hope they see sense.

Dexy5 profile image
Dexy5Graduate10 in reply to TailChaser

On the podcast, Tom is making it clear that the return of parkrun date is not linked to Step 4 on the road map. It is already legal to do it and that won't change, unless new legislation comes in.

TailChaser profile image
TailChaserGraduate10 in reply to Dexy5

Who knows. Things change so much and so frequently 🤷🏻‍♀️

TailChaser profile image
TailChaserGraduate10 in reply to Dexy5

Loads of National Trust ones have just come through Dexy!! 👏👏👏

Dexy5 profile image
Dexy5Graduate10 in reply to TailChaser

That’s a big step forward, especially for Greater London.

TailChaser profile image
TailChaserGraduate10 in reply to Dexy5

Slowly but surely. There’s Wimbledon and Tooting on the list, and Finsbury Park has just come through. Is it too soon to think it’s going to be ok 🤞 👍

Sandie1961 profile image
Sandie1961Graduate10 in reply to TailChaser

Woohoo 👏👏👏 Tom was on the World at One on Radio 4 today too with some enthusiastic parkrunners interviewed

RunaroundSue profile image

Brilliant

RunaroundSue profile image
RunaroundSueGraduate10

I suspect that some, but hopefully not too many, will use this opportunity to stop them resuming at all. If they perhaps wish they had never agreed in the first place because the numbers have increased so much and are possibly causing parking problems.

TailChaser profile image
TailChaserGraduate10 in reply to RunaroundSue

I’ve heard that Tring parkrun isn’t coming back at all Sue. That’s a Forestry Commission one I believe. Our local Fire Service College one is also down but it’s not to do with COVID apparently. Not sure that will be back. Hopefully there might be some new ones though as I’m sure there would have been some about to start up before all this happened.

RunaroundSue profile image
RunaroundSueGraduate10 in reply to TailChaser

The publicity may encourage other new ones, but probably not immediately. I don't imagine that parkrun want to be setting up new ones just yet.

TailChaser profile image
TailChaserGraduate10 in reply to RunaroundSue

True, but hopefully in time...

grumpyoldgirl profile image
grumpyoldgirl in reply to TailChaser

It's a real shame about Tring, not least because of the knock-on effect to neighbouring courses, who would have to worry about the extra runners turning up there.

TailChaser profile image
TailChaserGraduate10 in reply to grumpyoldgirl

Do you know how popular Tring was GOG?

grumpyoldgirl profile image
grumpyoldgirl in reply to TailChaser

It's not massive, about 200 normally i think, but on a sunny day it's a lot more. They were always having to mess about with rerouting the course because of concerns of damage to tree roots etc. Really beautiful spot, but parking could be tricky. And a bit steep for beginners! I suspect a lot of people will move to wendover, if that reopens ( forestry commission)

TailChaser profile image
TailChaserGraduate10 in reply to grumpyoldgirl

That’s quite a reasonable size. Perhaps it was more about the safety with the tree roots? I’m sure there are more dangerous ones though (Lyme Park comes to mind).

Dexy5 profile image
Dexy5Graduate10 in reply to RunaroundSue

I think you are right Sue.

grumpyoldgirl profile image
grumpyoldgirl in reply to TailChaser

Heard more about Tring - the land is council owned, but managed by the Woodland Trust. It's the Woodland trust that is refusing permission. There's a campaign going to try to persuade them to change their minds (I've emailed them, I hope lots of other people have too). The reasoning behind the decision is, let's say, inconsistent.

TailChaser profile image
TailChaserGraduate10 in reply to grumpyoldgirl

Aha, I got them confused with The Forestry Commission. Seems a very odd decision.

I will

Gutted, but atleast there's hope. I registered last year just as covid struck! Then I enrolled on C25K, graduating last July, joined this wonderful forum with people I don't know but I consider my so 'supportive running ' friends' and and the rest is history. Will be so excited for my first one!!! 🏃‍♀️😁😁😬

I think so too, no matter how disappointing it is, if it all went wrong it doesn’t bear thinking about.
