COGH Update - soon to cross the equator

At the moment, we’re between Kisangani (or Stanleyville) and the Equator

Kisangani was originally called Stanleyville, after Sir Henry Morton Stanley of "Dr Livingstone, I presume?" fame, who founded a trading post there.

Some 1,300 miles (2,100 km) from the mouth of the Congo River, Stanley founded the area's first trading post in December 1883. The settlement was known first as Falls Station (or "the Post Stanley Falls") and grew into a settlement called Stanleyville. A city terminus of steamer navigation on the Congo River, the town began as a trading post. It has been the major centre of the northern Congo since the late 19th century.

We are also very close to the equator, and will cross into the Southern hemisphere soon.

Keep on running!

Hi Linda, I didn’t know you had been here! Do you have any stories to share?

Apart from gtting robbed in Kenya early on in the trip and then having to take a crazy flight in a 3 seater plane after missing our original flight to Zanzibar, no not really 🙄. It was all one great trip where we visited Kenya, Uganda, (skirting) Rwanda, Zaire (as it was then), Lamu and Zanzibar ... we probably weren't quite this far West to be honest, but it does at last feel close to somewhere I know 😀. All pre-running days (pre-kids too!!!).

Other than getting robbed… 😀 Sounds like a brilliant trip!

Just looked up the photos - summer 1992!!!! I was a lot younger then 😂 Thank goodness this puncture happened near a village and on the flat! That's a young looking hubbie keeping his hands firmly in his pockets - no wheel changing for him!

We travelled the narrowest roads and steepest drops in this vehicle.

We visited the Silverbacks in Zaire - not sure of the ethics of that trip despite the sales pitch at the time.

What you don't see is the flies; what you don't hear is the gas (constant eruptions)!!!

The people we met in Uganda and Zaire were just lovely though ...

After church, in stunning fields of red millet

I love the photo Charlies1 - we’re a fine looking bunch aren’t we?! Though I’m surprised we had the time to stop for a group photo! I’m enjoying the warmth of the equatorial region!

Great post and comments from correspondents. Although I’m reduced to walking , I’ll add my few kilometres to the last sections. 😎

We‘re approaching Zambia, which is one of the few places I’ve actually been to on our route. It is nice to be running in sunshine!
