COGH Update - Lake Baikal

We are now running around Lake Baikal - the largest freshwater lake by volume in the world. Apparently, it contains over 20% of the world's fresh surface water, and more water than all of the North American Great Lakes combined - even though it appears tiny on a world map.

They run an ice marathon here annually (we have just missed this year's):

That is a great comparison C! It really is enormous beyond any previous conception I had! 😳

Thanks Charlies1. That sounds like a tough race (says the person just in from her 9km run!)

Yes, very tough! Well done on 9k - all set for 10k at the weekend?

No, not until next Wednesday because I run Saturdays (not) parkrun and VRunClub 5 (if I run over 9km on the latter I won't get a system time) and Mondays with a relatively new runner on his weekly 5km so I don't want him to miss his run.

That is such a tough marathon, running over that deep frozen lake, thanks for the information C1, such lovely photos of Lake Baikal

Interesting stuff! Some stunning photos too. What a shame we’ve missed the ice marathon 😂😂

Just a month too late! what a shame!

Sorry we missed the marathon; well, no not really. Don’t think I could manage that and certainly not in the cold!

Cold and featureless. I read one report that says it's the only marathon where you can see the finish line from the start line!

What a shame we missed the Marathon Charlie’s1, I am sure we would have enjoyed it. What a beautiful picture.

When I added my run today it was great to see I was running alongside the lake. Makes the adventure seem real. Learning a lot as we go. 😃

Yes, looking up these places certainly adds to the interest. Thanks

Lovely photo and more interesting info. I couldn't stand on a frozen lake and certainly not run on it!

Ha ha. It says the race director tests the ice depth with a drill. If it is 17 inches deep, it can support a tank :) Despite that, there are cracks & the ice keeps making noises. I agree with you, best to keep on the shore.

Thanks again C1, such interesting info, I’d never heard of the lake, but just this morning read that the world free diving record of 262 ft under ice has been broken by Alexey Molchanov at Lake Baikal. Brrrrr!

Yes, I think the lake is over a mile deep. Did they have to cut a hole in the ice for the dive, or did they wait for warmer weather?

lexi6 profile image

Yes they cut a 3sq metre hole in the ice and he dived in 3 degrees celsius water. Incredible feat.
