We are now running around Lake Baikal - the largest freshwater lake by volume in the world. Apparently, it contains over 20% of the world's fresh surface water, and more water than all of the North American Great Lakes combined - even though it appears tiny on a world map.
They run an ice marathon here annually (we have just missed this year's):
No, not until next Wednesday because I run Saturdays (not) parkrun and VRunClub 5 (if I run over 9km on the latter I won't get a system time) and Mondays with a relatively new runner on his weekly 5km so I don't want him to miss his run.
Ha ha. It says the race director tests the ice depth with a drill. If it is 17 inches deep, it can support a tank Despite that, there are cracks & the ice keeps making noises. I agree with you, best to keep on the shore.
Thanks again C1, such interesting info, I’d never heard of the lake, but just this morning read that the world free diving record of 262 ft under ice has been broken by Alexey Molchanov at Lake Baikal. Brrrrr!
Amazing to be at Late Baikal... or (by now... me being late responder) beyond it. Some fabulous pictures The one above is stunning. Looking forward to a good read. Thanks a million for sharing these and for keeping COGH on the road.👍😁
