Off-the-map 5ks

So today was the day I was finally starting to go “off-the-map” big time... well not big big time, but for my 5k runs I wanted to explore some new routes.

For my 10k training I had already found several new routes, but I needed something in my backyard for my shorter runs, and something other than my gorgeous, but slightly too well known and trodden former rail line of a route.

So all mapped on the footpath app, I kind of knew where I was heading, and off I went.

Out into the fields, across some sprinkled wood clusters here and there, several natural meres, and alongside some streams.

One section was through an old farm shop and yard. I used to think we always needed to drive there to get stuff, and now I’m easily running this distance ☺️.

Another section was on well gravelled paths besides new housing developments before returning to the other sides of some railway tracks, again leading to woods, fishponds and finally a dirt-track back to the street leading to our house.

I really feel lucky with our surroundings, although I have to admit I get runner’s envy every time I see a gorgeous picture of someone else’s running route! 🤤🤣

Time was nothing to brag about, but I did have to stop a few times and check I was going the right way. So that affected the time. But overall 4.6k and I felt great afterwards! I had set out at 16:30 which seemed to have been perfect for avoiding most dog walkers, and I crossed path with only one set of walkers!

Weather was also great, not too hot or cold, just perfect!

Happy running everyone, and explore those exciting, desirable new running routes.

Ah, there's nothing quite like exploring a new route. Though getting somewhere you used to drive to is satisfying too!

And both (different route on paths to a place I used to drive to) is even better 🤣🤣🤣 thank you! Yes, definitely. 😃😀😄😁

New routes...how exciting!

They look very scenic too 😍

I walked to the shops today to pick up a prescription...I would usually drive there...it took me 22 minutes there and back, including being in the chemist, and popping into the Spar!

That looks and sounds like a good route 👍

I went exploring with the dogs on our walk yesterday, and discovered why we never run down a certain path.

But that looks so great and doggie seems to think so too! 🤣😃😍👍🏽

It is a great view; he’s looking towards a very local cow field - but both dogs had to climb over the stile as the bottom was very thoroughly meshed.

We are all truly on a voyage of discovery, CBDB, and your route is very picturesque 😁 The beautiful weather is helping at the moment 🌞 Great run report - sounds like an enjoyable run for you today 😁👍

Thank you, yes. Such a nice way to express that, “voyage of discovery“. Love that. 👍🏽😍🏃🏽‍♀️

It’s so great to explore new running routes and so much fun. When I find mine I get so excited and it’s like an adventure for me. For me ,which ever way or route I find there is always hills or inclines to achieve either at the beginning or towards the end. That’s what becomes of living in the sticks........😀. However I wouldn’t change it for the world!

Hope you have many happy runs on your new running routes! The photos are beautiful 👍😀😀x

Thank you, yes! When you go out exploring, how do you find the new routes? Do you study maps beforehand, or compare routes on Strava or just go out and head off to where you haven’t been before?

in reply to CBDB

Hi CBDB. No I don’t study maps etc. I just really go out and just head off where I haven’t been before. If I come to some where I think that maybe I can’t go any further I ask if if I can if I see some one or just go another way. That’s the adventure for me! 😀x

It's great to find new routes isn't it? And your new route sounds and looks really nice. Getting away from the crowd is always a bonus. It's so nice that the weather is finally being kinder and so the footpaths and tracks are easier to run.

Yes, this route included a section where meter-high waves in an ocean of mud defeated me last time. 🌊 All dry now, just very uneven, which I assume is great for my ankles!

Lifluf profile image
LiflufGraduate10 in reply to CBDB

It's supposed to be better for ankles but only if you take care. I end up much slower on the footpaths - my splits show exactly where I'm running off road.

So that’s why I am slow ... 🤣🤣🐌🐢🦥🐛

Haha, me too😏😊

Looks like a nice new route! I must admit it looks a tad too solitary for me, I'm a chicken nowadays. And getting somewhere you used to drive to, that's a nice push eh? Look where you are, would you have thought that so many months ago?
